WELLS to YEATON

WELLS, JOHN EDWIN
Born Nov. 18, 1848 in Vienna (son of John and Rhode <Ambrose> Wells) Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Feb. 4, 1905. He is a farmer and lives on the farm in Readfield (South Road, in 1909) formerly owned by Reuel Packard. (Married twice 1. Nancy Higgins of Montreal, Canada in 1870. She died in 1917. 2.Nancy <Barnard> Harris of Freedom, Maine. John Edwin Wells died Feb. 2, 1924. He is buried in Glenside Cemetery, Winthrop)


WESTON, COSTELLO, REV.
Born Aug. 27, 1844 in Mt. Vernon (son of Alfred and Sophronia <Watson> Weston) Made a Master Mason in St. Lawrence, Canton, NY 1867. Educated in common schools, Eaton Boarding School at Kents Hill, and St. Lawrence University, New York. Ordained a minister of the Universalist Church in 1868 and has held pastorates at Bridgton, Rockland, Dexter and Bath, Maine. Halifax, Nova Scotia, Gloucester and Charlton, MA and St. Johnsbury, VT, Hammonton, N.J. Is now retired and lives in Mt. Vernon (remained active in Universalist Church and in conducting marriages in this area after his retirement. Often associated with the Readfield Union Meeting House. Married 1. about 1868 to Julia MNU m2. 1890 to Martha Hamilton of Augusta. Rev. Weston died 7/25/1930 buried Readfield Corner Cemetery)


WHITTIER, JOSIAH 2ND
Born May 5, 1791 Chesterville, Maine  (son of  Phineas and Mehitable <French> Whittier of Chesterville). Raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason in Temple Lodge, Winthrop July 25, 1825. He was one of the petitioners for the original (Lafayette Chapter) in 1826 and was the first S.W. in 1826; Master 1827-28. His name is on the dispensation of 1849 and also the charter of 1850 and he was the first Master after the re-organization. He was a farmer and one of the prominent men of the town in his day. One of the selectmen 1833-35 and many years a Justice of the Peace. Died (in Readfield) Dec. 18, 1867. (Name appears on census, old records and deeds as 2nd to avoid confusion because there was another Josiah Whittier of about the same age living on North Road in Readfield at the same time. Josiah 2nd married 1815 Sarah "Sally" White dgt. of Samuel and Mary Ann <Wyman> White. They took over Samuel's farm on Tallwood Drive and it remained in the Whittier family well past the middle of the 20th Century when the last of the Whittier line sold their farm to William and Lorraine Rourke. Josiah Whittier 2nd is buried in the Whittier Cemetery near his old homestead on Beaver Dam Road)


WILLARD, SULLIVAN SAVAGE "S. S."
Born July 5, 1825 in New Sharon, ME (son of Nathaniel and Abigail <Savage> Willard). Came to Readfield in 1872. Raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge July 3, 1880; J.W. 1881-82 and 1885-86l S.W. 1887. Selectman of Readfield 1885-1888. He was a carpenter and farmer and lived on the old Cornforth farm in this town. He died Feb. 7, 1894. (Married about 1857 to Olive Asaphine Z. Gould. Buried Readfield Corner Cemetery)


WILLIAMS, JAMES, REV.
Born May 24, 1782 in Stowe, MA (son of unknown) Made a Master Mason in Bethlehem Lodge in Augusta 1822. He has been a member of Temple Lodge, Winthrop. He was one of the petitioners of the Lafayette Lodge and a charter member; J.W. 1826; S.W. 1827-28; Master 1829. He was a blacksmith by trade and also a manufacturer of axes. In 1812 he went to Baltimore, MD where he was making axes and afterward engaged in the same business in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. He was a local Methodist preacher and a highly esteemed citizen. He was a member of the House of Representatives from Readfield in 1828-29. He died at Fredericton, N.B. Dec. 30, 1850. His remains were brought to Readfield for burial (at Readfield Corner Cemetery). (Married 1803 Nabby Whitney of Stow, MA)


WILLIAMS, FRANCIS ASBURY "FRANK"
Born July 22, 1820 in at Kents Hill (son of Rev. John and Nabby <Whitney> Williams above)  Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Jun 7, 1851; J.D. 1852; Secretary 1854. A blacksmith who lived at Presque Isle, Fredericton, New Brunswick and finally Skowhegan where he was engaged in the hardware business and where he died Jan. 2, 1902. (Married Susan MNU in 1845. Francis Williams is buried in Southside Cemetery, Skowhegan)


WILLIAMS, JOHN MERRILL
Born Jan. 27, 1841 in Readfield (son of Miles and Almira <Pierce> Williams) Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Oct. 15, 1862; Secretary 1890-92. Served in the 21st Maine Infantry in the Civil War. Member of the S.S. Committee 1903-04. Member of Lafayette Chapter O.E.S. Member of Lewis H. Wing Post G.A.R. at Wayne and of Readfield Grange P. of H. Is Trial Justice. He is a manufacturing jeweler and lives at Readfield. (Married twice m1 1864 to Louisa Friend who died 1903. m2. 1905 to Ida Hall. John Williams died of chronic nephritis on June 17, 1921, six days after the devastating fire of 1921 when most of Readfield Corner was destroyed, including his home - the only house that was lost in the fire. He is buried in Readfield Corner Cemetery)


WILLIAMS, JOSIAH WESLEY
Born  May 25, 1853 in Readfield (son of Miles and Abigail <Sedgeley> Williams and half brother of John M. Williams above) Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge July 8, 1893. He is a farmer and harness maker. He is a farmer and lives in Farmingdale. Treasurer of the town in 1908. (Married 1882 Adella Dudley in Augusta. Josiah Williams died in Farmingdale in 1927 and buried in Readfield Corner Cemetery)


WILSON, AUGUSTUS HAMBLET "A.H."
Born July 3, 1848 in North Anson, Maine (son of Elijah and Sarah Wilson ) Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Jul 3, 1848. Hardware dealer and harness maker. Lives in Readfield. (Married 1875 to Anna Wells. A.H. Wilson died in Readfield Sept. 1930, buried Readfield Corner Cemetery)


WILSON, CHARLES ELMER
Born Jan. 31, 1881 in Mt. Vernon (son of A.H. and Anna <Wells> Wilson above) Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Jan. 12, 1905. Attended school at Maine Wesleyan Seminary at Kents Hill. He is now (1909) a cashier for the Swift Meat Co. at Manchester, NH where he lives. (Married Willa D. Johnson. Eventually returned to live in Readfield where he died 11/28/1951, buried in Readfield Corner Cemetery)


WINTERS, AURELIUS HAROLD "A.H."
Born Feb. 12, 1856 in Montville, Maine (son of Thomas and Hepsibeth <Brazier> Winters) Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge July 7, 1900; J.S. 1901-03. A farmer, lives at Kents Hill on the old Jewett farm. (Married Joanna Decker of Unity Plantation dgt. of Cyrus and Nancy Decker. A.H. Winters died Apr. 22, 1947 in Readfield. Buried in Readfield Corner Cemetery. Younger brother Henry was the founder of H.T. Winters in Winslow, ME)


WINTERS, CYRUS DECKER
Born Jan. 5, 1881 at Unity Plantation, Maine (son of  A.H. and Joanna <Decker> Winters) Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Oct. 17, 1903. Lives at Kents Hill and is a U.S. rural mail carrier (in 1909). (Married 1. 1905 Clara Jones of Alna, ME who died 1918. m2. 1919 Elizabeth Weaver of Washington D.C. Sold his properties in Kents Hill in the early part of 1920 and moved, with his new wife, to Virginia where he worked as a merchant. He died of an abscess at the root of his tongue in 1929 in Waynesboro, VA. Buried in Readfield Corner Cemetery)


WOODWARD, JOSEPH TIMOTHY
Born Jan. 27, 1838 in Sidney, ME (son of  Lemuel H and Eunice <Ward> Woodward) Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge May 5, 1860. Educated at Kents Hill School. Adjutant of the 21st Maine Regt. Infantry and was wounded at Port Hudson, LA. Served as Deputy Provost Marshal and Com. of enrollment of the 3rd District of Maine. Member of the Maine House of Representatives 1862, and of the Senate 1867-68, and State Librarian. Inspector of Customs and Vice Consul at Conticook, Canada. Was for a time in seed and nursery business in Rochester, NY and Asst. Gen. Manager of the Sewall Car Heating Co. A member of Chapter Council and Commandery. Also a member of Seth Williams Post G.A.R. and the M.O. of L.L. of Maine, and is a member of the bar. Lives in Sidney, Maine (in 1909). (Unmarried. Was a practicing attorney and lived in Sidney throughout his life. Died Apr. 22, 1922 in Sidney. Buried in Bean Cemetery, Sidney)


WRIGHT, WARREN ADAMS, DR.
Born March 9, 1837 in Palmyra, Maine (son of Reuel and Fanny <Strickland> Wright) Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge May 9, 1863. He received his medical education at Bowdoin College Medical School and also at Harvard Medical School, from which the latter institution he graduated in 1862 and the same year he settled in Readfield (Church Road) in the active practice of his profession in which he has continued to the present time (in 1909). He has been a member of the S.S. Committee in Readfield, and has taken an active part in official affairs. (Married twice m1.Mary Jane Goodwin of Fryeburg, ME, she died 1899. Six children, all but two pre-deceased Dr. Wright. m2.1902 to Nellie Fogg of Readfield. Dr. Wright died 1919 at Readfield. Was the town physician for more than 50 years, until the time of his death from chronic nephritis at age 81.Buried Readfield Corner Cemetery)


WRIGHT, WILLIS HOWARD
Born Mar. 14, 1867 in Readfield (eldest child of Dr. Warren and Mary Jane <Goodwin> Wright above) Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge June 6, 1891. Has been in the employ of Maine Central Rail Road as clerk and station agent until 1908, in which year he resigned from his position and purchased a farm in Mt. Vernon where he is now living (in 1909). (Married 1904 to Florence Cummings of Orono. Willis Wright died 1913 in Mt. Vernon of uremic poisoning. Buried in Readfield Corner Cemetery)


YEATON, ALFRED HOWARD
Born  Nov. 19, 1848 in Belgrade, Maine (son of John and Ruth <Gilman> Yeaton of Belgrade) Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Mar. 8, 1890; J.S. 1890. He is a blacksmith by trade but is now farming at Winthrop Center, Maine (in 1909). (His parents moved the family to Readfield between 1850 and 1860. At age 21, in 1870, he was living with Noyes Sherburn at Readfield Depot another Mason and a blacksmith from whom Alfred was learning the trade, no doubt. He married Evelyn MNU in 1873. They lived in Hudson, MA and Skowhegan, ME for short periods of time between 1900 and 1910 while Alfred worked as a salesman and meat cutter in grocery stores, before settling on a farm in Winthrop. He died in Winthrop in 1931. Buried in Readfield Corner Cemetery)
