AUBIN to BEAN

AUBIN, FRANCOIS BENOIT
Born in St. Gervais, Province Quebec, Canada, 1839. Made a Master Mason of Lafayette Lodge on July 5, 1873; J.D. 1880. He was a scythe maker by trade and lived at Fayette for many years. He afterward moved to Skowhegan, ME where he died October, 1896.


BACHELDER, JAMES ROBINSON
Born (11/12/1792) in (Brentwood) New Hampshire. Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge June 30, 1828; Marshal 1830. He was not identified with the Fraternity after the revival (1849) though he remained to his death a widely known citizen of the town. Having considerable property he was principally occupied in care of the same. He was a Colonel in the old Militia, High Sheriff of Kennebec County in 1812 and Adjunct General of Maine in 1855. He died in Readfield November 3, 1871.


BACON, LORY
Born (10/31/1783 in Charlton, Worcester County, MA). Made a Master Mason of the Temple Lodge, Winthrop, June 21, 1819; S.W. 1823 and Master 1824. A charter member of Lafayette Lodge and the first Master in 1826. He afterward moved to Augusta, where he was a member and Master of the Bethlehem Lodge. He was D.D. and G.M. of the Third Masonic District in 1846, 1847, 1848 and 1849, and High Priest of Jerusalem R.A.C. He was a merchant at Kents Hill and afterward at Readfield Corner, and probably at Augusta. He was a selectman of Readfield for six years from 1819; the first post master at Kents Hill in 1826 and town clerk in 1836. In the War of 1812 he was a Sergeant in a Readfield Company in Lieut. Col. Sweet's Co. He died in Augusta (8/4/1860).


BALDWIN, DEXTER
Born (7/5/1798 in Antrim, NH. Settled in Readfield before 1825 and moved to Mt. Vernon where he served as postmaster in the village starting in 1829 and was a physician, graduate of Dartmouth College.) He was one of the first to become a member of the lodge in 1826; he had also been a member of the Temple Lodge in Winthrop. He was a Justice of the Peace for many years. He was Marshal of the lodge in 1828. He was the first post master at Mt. Vernon village in 1828. (He eventually moved to Massachusetts where he died in Saxonville, Framingham, Middlesex, MA 5/27/1870).


BARBOUR, JAMES
Born in Gardiner, Maine 3/31/1824. Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge, May 16, 1873. Elected an Honorary Member, April 6, 1901. A farmer, resident of Readfield (in 1909).


BEAL, ELLIOTT JOHNSON
Born in Farmingdale, Maine Oct. 8, 1853. Made a Mason in Augusta, Maine (Bethlehem Lodge) Affiliated in Lafayette Lodge Jan. 7, 1897. He was S.S., 1897; J.D. 1898; S.W. 1899-1900; He is a stone mason by trade and for many years was employed by MCRR (Maine Central Rail Road) on important construction work having charge of the work. In 18987 he purchased a farm in Readfield and has been largely engaged in orcharding. At present he is superintendent of the farm at Maine Wesleyan Seminary (Kents Hill School) at Kents Hill and lives there (in 1909).


BEAN, FRANKLIN
Born in Readfield March 1, 1791. Raised to Sublime degree of Master Mason, May 4, 1826 in Lafayette Lodge. He was Treasurer 1827, 1828, 1829; J.W., 1830-31, and S.W., 1832. His name is in the Dispensation of 1849 and the Charter of 1850 (the Charter was reissued after Lafayette Lodge's 17 years of silence 1832-1849). He acted as J.W. at the re-organization of the lodge, 1849. He was a farmer. He died June 6, 1869, and was buried with Masonic honors. His home on the farm (Chase Road) overlooking Torsey Pond is now occupied by Mr. George Black (in 1909).


BEAN, OLIVER
Born in Readfield, Nov. 15, 1797 (first cousin of Franklin Bean above). Raised to Sublime degree of Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Jan. 20, 1850 and ever after one of its leading members. He held but a few offices in the lodge but was Marshal for many years. He founded the charity fund known as "Bean Charity Fund". He was one of the selectmen in Readfield for twenty years starting in 1828. A member of the Maine House of Representatives 1832-33 and of the Senate 1848-49. He was a soldier of the War of 1812 and was prominently identified with the old Militia, holding the rank of Colonel. He was a farmer, his farm being that lately owned by Bro. Ernest A. Morgan. He died June 11, 1869.


BEAN, EMERY OLIVER
Born in Readfield Sept. 10, 1819 (son of Oliver above). Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Sept. 21, 1850 and for over fifty years was one of the most prominent members of the lodge. He was Secretary in 1851, 1852, 1862, 1873, 1874 and 1875; J.W., 1853; S.W., 1854-1855; Master 1856-59 and 1864-65; Marshal 1860-61, 1883-84; Chaplain 1887-88, 1890-92. A member of Jerusalem chapter, R.A.M. and Lafayette Chapter, O.E.S. He was admitted to Kennebec Bar in 1843 and was an active attorney for sixty-one years. He was town clerk of Readfield 1849-50 and 1853-54 and for years a member of the School Committee. He was a member of the Maine House of Representatives in 1852, and of the Senate in 1856, and Judge of Probate of Kennebec County 1881-1885. He was also a member of the Board of Trustees of Westbrook Seminary, President of the Universalist State Convention, and for seven years was one of the trustees of the Maine State College at Orono. He died Dec. 13, 1904, and was buried with Masonic honors.

BEARSE to BUTMAN

BEARSE, EZRA
Born 1771 (Barnstable County, MA). He was made a Master in Lafayette lodge May 3, 1827. He was a farmer and lived many years in Readfield. Died there Oct. 7, 1843.


BILLINGS, GEORGE WESTON
Born in Fayette, ME July 11, 1834. Raised to the Master Mason degree Feb. 17, 1872 in Lafayette lodge. He was a farmer all his life, He died in Fayette Sept. 29, 1908.


BILLINGS, LOANNAS CYRILLO
Born in Fayette, ME April 4, 1836. Raised to Sublime Degree of Master Mason in Lafayette lodge, Sept. 10, 1864 and became a member Nov. 12, 1864. He was a farmer n his native town where he died June 3, 1871 and was buried with Masonic rites.


BLAISDELL, JAMES SANDFORD
Born in Rome, Maine on May 13, 1850. Raised to Master Mason degree April 26, 1873. Was former a carpet printer but now a farmer and lives in Rome (in 1909).


BLANCAHRD, SYLVANUS JUDKINS
Born August, 1826 in Maine. Raised to the degree of Master Mason in Lafayette lodge Mar. 28, 1863.  He was a farmer and teamster, his home being at Readfield Depot. He died May 29, 1870 (of consumption) and was buried with Masonic honors (at Dudley Plains Cemetery).


BODGE, FRANK HAMLIN
Born in Fayette, ME Feb. 6, 1869. Raised to the Master Mason degree in Lafayette lodge Jan. 20, 1902; J.D. 1902; He is a farmer and lives on the farm in Fayette that was the home of his father and grandfather (in 1909).


BOWLBY, BENJAMIN HARDY PARKER
Born in Lawrenceville, Nova Scotia Feb. 25, 1886. Made a Master in Lafayette Lodge Oct. 19, 1907. He is a farmer by occupation and lives in Readfield.


BRAINARD, ASAHEL
Born in Winthrop, ME Feb. 6, 1797. Raised to the Sublime degree of Master Mason degree in Lafayette lodge May 17, 1827. He was S.D. in 1830 and a Stewart for several years after the revival (1849) of the lodge and was elected Honorary Member June 3, 1872. One of the selectmen of Readfield in 1835-1837. He was a farmer and a highly esteemed citizen of the town. He died April 27, 1875.


BRAND, FRANK LESLIE
Born in Starks, Maine Aug. 5, 1858. Raised to the Master Mason degree in Lafayette lodge Apr. 1, 1899. A member of the Winthrop R.A.C. and Trinity Commandery, K.T. For over twenty years salesman and collector for the McCormick Harvester Machine Co. and the International Harvester Co. Lives at Augusta, Maine.


BRAND, WILLIAM WIRT
Born in Pittston, Maine March 8, 1880. Raised to the degree of Master Mason degree in Lafayette lodge July 6, 1901/ He is a member of Winthrop R.A. Chapter. By occupation an engineer of stationary engine. Lives at Pittston, Maine.


BRANN, ROBERT ALVIN
Born in Belgrade, Maine Feb. 27, 1877. Raised to the Sublime degree of Master Mason degree in Lafayette lodge Mar. 28, 1905. Was formerly telegraph operator and station agent for M.C.R.R. Lives in Augusta and is salesman for the International Reaper Co. He is a member of Winthrop R.A. Chapter and Trinity Commandery, K.T.


BROWN, CHARLES SANBORN
Born in Readfield Feb. 9, 1866. Raised to the degree of Master Mason degree in Lafayette lodge Apr. 4, 1903. A member of Lafayette Lodge O.E.S. Resides in Readfield and is in the grocery and meat business. (On June 11, 1921 a devastating fire engulfed Readfield Corner when lightening struck a barrel of kerosene in Charles Brown's store, adjacent to the Masonic Hall. Most of Readfield Corner burned, including Brown's store and the Masonic Hall)


BROWN, FRANK HENRY
Born in Readfield July 25, 1853.Raised to the degree of Master Mason degree in Lafayette lodge  April 21, 1875. He was J.S. in 1877-78. He was a carpet printer by trade. He died in Gardiner Feb. 2, 1882.


BROWN, FREDERIC ISAAC "F.I."
Born in Chesterville, Maine Dec. 26, 1851. Raised to the degree of Master Mason degree in Lafayette lodge Oct. 14, 1890. Treasurer since 1895. Member of the Winthrop Chapter R.A.M. Alpha Council, R. & S.M., Trinity Commandery, K.T. and Lafayette Chapter, O.E.S. President of the Kennebec County Agricultural Society, 1907-08. He has been engaged in the meat and grocery business at Readfield since 1879. Selectman for six years from 1888; town clerk, 1885-1888; member of the Maine House of Representatives 1891; Maine State Senate 1905-07. Lives at Readfield (in 1909).


BUNNELL, FREEMAN WORTHLEY
Born in Phillips, Maine Sept. 22, 1841. Made a Mason in Blue Mountain Lodge, Phillips. Affiliated with Lafayette Lodge Mar. 12, 1870. He was a scythe maker at North Wayne previous to 1869. Went to Oregon in the early 1870s where he lived for many years. Now lives in Gottsville, CA where he is engaged in the mining business.


BUSWELL, FRANKLIN McKENZIE
Born in Norway, Maine Aug. 11, 1886. Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Jan, 2, 1909. Educated in schools in Norway. Superintendent of the Wilton division of the Maine Telephone Co. Lives in Wilton, ME (in 1909).


BUTMAN, JAMES OWEN
Born in Vassalboro, Maine Sept. 7, 1836. Raised to the Sublime degree of Master Mason degree in Bethlehem Lodge in Augusta. Affiliated in Lafayette Lodge Sept. 24, 1869. J.W. 1869-70; S.W., 1871; Master 1872-73; Chaplain 1878-79, 1884, 1886. He came to Readfield in 1866 and purchased a farm, where he has since lived, extensively engaged in orcharding and sheep raising. Selectman in Readfield 1892, 93, 94. He is a member of the Readfield Grange, P. of H. (was the first Master of the Grange when it was established.)


BUTMAN, JAMES WARREN
Born in Readfield (son of James O. Butman above) Sept. 7, 1880. Raised to the degree of Master Mason degree in Lafayette lodge Jan. 6, 1902; J.S. 1907-08. Member of Winthrop Chapter R.A.M. and Lafayette Chapter O.E.S. Attended school at Kents Hill School and graduated from University of Maine. He is a farmer and also engaged in shipping apples. Lives on the home farm in Readfield (Butman Hill, Winthrop Road.)

CAMPBELL to CURRIER

CAMPBELL, WILFRED R.
Born in Newcastle, Maine Feb. 15, 1850. Made Master Mason in Lafayette lodge August 16, 1873. He was a carpet printer at the time he was made a Mason. He later went to Boston and worked for the Youth Companion Ct. While working for this company he was accidentally killed July 12, 1893 in the building of the company.


CARLE, HERBERT HENRY
Born in Sangerville, Maine Aug. 17, 1859. Raised to the Master Mason degree in Lafayette lodge July 2, 1904; S.S. 1904-1905. Member of Lafayette Chapter O.E.S. He is a farmer, lives at Readfield Depot (in 1909).


CASE, ELISHA SNOW
Born at Readfield Nov. 27, 1809. Received his Master Mason degree in Lafayette lodge Apr. 3, 1852 and was elected an Honorary Member Dec. 1, 1888. He was a farmer and surveyor by occupation. Selectman in Readfield twenty-four years in succession from 1842. Member of the House of Representatives 1858. He was an exact mathematician and probably knew more of the bounds, lot lines and town lines than any man in town. He was extremely eccentric which often caused him much trouble. He died Sept. 1, 1894.


CHAPMAN, IRA S.
Born in Waterloo, New York Dec. 7, 1818. Raised to the Sublime degree of Master Mason degree in Northern Star Lodge in Anson, Maine March 4, 1848. He was one of the charter members of Lafayette Lodge in 1850 (at time of the revival)l was J.D. in 1849; S.D. 1850-51 and  1855; J.W. 1856-1859; W.M. 1860. He was a woolen manufacturer in Anson and afterwards in Readfield where was associated with Anson P. Morrill (Gov. of Maine) for twenty years. He died at Readfield Jan. 6, 1870.


CHASE, ALDEN FITZROY "A.F."
Born in Woodstock, Maine Oct. 26, 1842. Made a Mason in Paris Lodge, South Paris, Maine. A charter member of Newton Lodge at Wilbraham, MA and a member of Felicity Lodge at Bucksport. Affiliated with Lafayette Lodge Dec. 4, 1897. Educated at Kents Hill School and Wesleyan University (CT). For twelve years he was a teacher at Maine Wesleyan Seminary (Kents Hill School) and two years at Wilbraham Academy. He was twelve years president of the East Maine Conference Seminary at Bucksport, Maine and in 1897 was elected president at Maine Wesleyan Seminary, Kents Hill. He has been very prominently identified with the work of the Methodist Episcopal Church both in the local and General Conference. He died at Kents Hill Oct. 22, 1898.


CHASE, JOHN ABBOTT
born at Kents Hill (son of A.F. Chase above) May 15, 1875. Raised to the Master Mason degree in Lafayette lodge May 4, 1907; J.S. 1907; J.D. 1908. Educated at East Maine Conference Seminary and Ohio Wesleyan University and entered the Medical Dept. of Columbia University, but was obliged to relinquish the course because of ill health. now one of the proprietors of Camp Cebennek (Chase's Boys Camp), an outing camp for boys on Torsey Pond, Readfield. Lives at Kents Hill (in 1909).


COFRAN, GEORGE WASHINGTON
Born in Readfield July 7, 1817. Made Master Mason degree in Lafayette lodge  Feb. 1, 1868; J.S. 1868; S.S. 1873-1875; J.D. 1869-71 and 1876-78; S.D. 1879-80; J.W. 1883-84; S.W. 1885-86; Tyler 1887. He was a carpenter by trade and also a farmer. He died March 25, 1895 in Medford, MA.


COLE, CHARLES JOHN
Born in Columbia, Loring, Ohio Aug. 19, 1860. Made a Mason in Normal Lodge, Normal, Illinois. Affiliated with Lafayette Lodge Aug. 2, 1902. Member of Lafayette Chapter O.E.S. He is a lawyer by profession and was engaged in practice in Illinois until his health forced him to abandon the law, and has since been engaged in farming. Lives at Kents Hill (in 1909).


COLEMAN, GEORGE EDMUND
Born in Augusta Sept. 19, 1862. Raised to the Sublime degree of Master Mason degree in Lafayette lodge May 5, 1888; S.D. 1889; J.W. 1890-91; S.W. 1892; Master 1893-94. Member of the Winthrop R.A. Chapter and Trinity Commandery, K.T. Station agent and telegraph operator for M.C.R.R. for some years; also proprietor of a summer resort (Coleman Cottages / Coleman Grove) on Lake Maranacook. Town clerk of Readfield 1893-94. Secretary of Kennebec County Agricultural Society seven years. Lives at Readfield Depot.


COLLINS, LEVI
Born at Litchfield, Maine Feb. 26, 1809. Probably made a Mason at Bethlehem Lodge in Augusta. Affiliated with Lafayette Lodge since March 3, 1883. He has been a tanner before coming to Readfield but did not follow that business in town. He was elected Honorary Member of the lodge June 2, 1888. He died at Readfield Depot Sept. 27, 1892.


COLLINS, MARK STEWART
Born at North Anson, Maine Dec. 29, 1868. Raised to the Master Mason degree in Lafayette lodge March 4, 1895 and of Lafayette Chapter O.E.S. Member of Winthrop R.A.C. and Trinity Commandery, K.T.; Station agent and telegraph operator for M.C.R.R.; proprietor of Maranacook Grove, a summer resort on the M.C.R.R. in Readfield, with which he has been identified for over twenty years. Lives at Readfield Depot.


CROSBY, MAURICE WINFIELD
Born at Belfast, Maine June 6, 1877. Made a Master Mason in Lafayette lodge April 29, 1899. Was for some years engaged in telephone business (founder of the Readfield Telephone and Telegraph Co.) Since disposing of his interest in that business he has been engaged in farming.


CURRIER, GEORGE STANLEY
Born at Readfield August 23, 1801 (son of Dr. Samuel Currier, first physician at Readfield Corner). Raised to the Sublime degree of Master Mason degree in Lafayette lodge July 13, 1826. He was Tyler in 1826-27; Secretary 1829-30; J.W. 1851; S.W. 1852; Master 1853; S.D. 1857. He was a Charter Member of 1850. He was a doctor and located at Belgrade and afterward at Readfield and practiced his profession in this and neighboring towns for many years. He died at Readfield April 6, 1863.

DAICY, CHARLES MANNEY
Born in Auburn Maine Deb. 11, 1872. Made Master Mason degree in Lafayette lodge  Sept. 7, 1901. J.D. 1903; S.D. 1904-05; J.W. 1906; S.W. 1907; Master 1908; A member of Lafayette Lodge O.E.S. Came to Readfield 1899. A house painter by trade. (In 1909) a U.S. mail carrier in the R.F.D. department. Lives in Readfield (1909).


DAGGETT, WARREN
Born in Leeds, Maine May 12, 1833. Raised to the Master Mason degree in Lafayette lodge May 7, 1864. He was a Steward in 1865. From very young in life until too old for heavy labor he was a workman in the scythe business, working for many years at North Wayne and later in other centers of that business. He was made an Honorary Member of Lafayette Lodge Feb. 1, 1903. He died in Antrim, NH May 5, 1904.


DAVIS, JOHN LAMBERT
Born at Readfield Aug. 30, 1844 where he has lived all his life on the farm where he was born (Sturtevant Hill Road, an orchardist). Raised to the Sublime degree of Master Mason degree in Lafayette lodge Oct. 7, 1876/ He was J.D. 1879; J.W. 1893; and one of the Stewards for a number of years.


DOW, FRANK ADELBERT
Born at Alna, Maine May 20, 1866. Raised to the Master Mason degree in Lafayette lodge March 7, 1891; S.S. 1892; S.D. 1893; J.W. 1894; Master 1895-1898. Member of the Winthrop R.A. Chapter. Alpha Council, and Trinity Commandery, K.T. and Lafayette Chapter O.E.S. He was fourteen years cook at Maine Wesleyan Seminary, Kents Hill. Is now in the livery and stage business and mail carrier in company with Bro. H.M. Gibbs. Member of the S.S. Committee of Readfield 1906-1908. Lives at Kents Hill (in 1909).


DOW, THOMAS AYERS
Born at Alna, Maine Nov. 28, 1875. Raised to the Master Mason degree in Lafayette lodge March 5, 1898. He is a cook and lives in Wiscasset (in 1909).


DUDLEY, DAVID
Born at Readfield Dec, 26, 1831. Raised to Master Mason degree in Lafayette lodge Aug. 25, 1866; J.D. 1889; S.D. 1890-91; J.W. 1896. Member of the Readfield Board of Selectmen 1899-1900. In earlier life was a carpet printer but later returned to the farm where he was born, where he lived until his death. He died June 4, 1900 and was buried with Masonic rites.


DUDLEY, SUMNER AUGUSTUS
Born in Readfield Apr. 15, 1848. Made a Mason in Vernon Valley Lodge, Mt. Vernon, ME; affiliated with Lafayette Lodge since Aug. 1, 1891; Steward 1894-95; He us a farmer and lives in Mt. Vernon.


DUDLEY, ERVINE CLARENCE
Born in Readfield Jan. 30, 1875. Raised to the Master Mason degree in Lafayette lodge July 7, 1906. He is a farmer living on the home farm in Readfield.


DUNN, JOSEPH ELLERY FOXCROFT
Born at Poland, Maine but date unknown. Raised to the Sublime degree of Master Mason degree in Lafayette lodge Feb. 16, 1850. He was a graduate of Bowdoin College. He was a lawyer and practiced his profession at Machias and North Wayne. Later he engaged in the manufacture of men's boots in Waterville, Maine where he died in 1853-54.

FARNHAM to FULLER

FARNHAM, ORRIN
Born in Vassalboro, Maine May 22, 1828. He was made a Mason in the Kennebec Lodge, Hallowell and affiliated with Lafayette Lodge March 6, 1875. He was a farmer and lived in Readfield but died in Augusta at City Hospital where he had been taken for treatment Aug. 9, 1906.


FILLEBROWN, GEORGE MILLER
Born in Readfield May 20, 1830 (son of James III and Hannah <Bean> Fillebrown). Raised to the Master Mason degree in Lafayette lodge June 6, 1857; S.W. 1861-62; Master 1863 and 1884; Marshal 1869-71. Readfield Town Clerk 1857-1864. Steward at the Maine Agricultural College at Orono when that institution opened to students. When in Readfield he was a merchant and proprietor of the hotel (J.O. Craig's Elmwood House - he married Craig's daughter). He went to Ayer, MA in 1884 and was for some years engaged in business there. He died in Gloucester, MA May 18, 1908.


FISH, MELZAR WESTON
Born in Duxbury, MA May 10, 1861 and came to Maine when 5 years old. Was made Master Mason of Lafayette Lodge March 2, 1907. He is a farmer and lives in (West) Mt, Vernon (in 1909).


FOGG, ARTHUR JOSIAH
Born in Readfield Sept. 20, 1875 (son of Charles H. and Ada <Hankerson> Fogg). Raised to Master Mason degree of Lafayette Lodge Jan. 21, 1898; J.S. 1898. Is a traveling salesman and lives in Boston (in 1909).


FOGG, FRANK PRESCOTT
Born in Readfield Sept. 19, 1862 (son of Dudley G. and Anna <Prescott> Fogg). Raised to Master Mason of Lafayette Lodge Jan. 6, 1894. He is now (1909) advertising agent for the National Magazine and lives in Dorchester, MA. He has traveled extensively in the interests of National Magazine.


FOGG, DUDLEY STACEY
Born in Readfield Apr. 10, 1841 (son of Josiah N. and Hannah <Shaw> Fogg). Raised to Sublime degree of Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Oct. 10, 1862; receiving all his degrees at one meeting; S.W. 1866; member of Jerusalem Chapter R.A.M. Hallowell. He was a farmer and also engaged in grain business (father and grandfather owned grist mill at Factory Square) and later was foreman in car shop at Taunton, MA. He was in the 21st Regiment of Maine Vols. in the Civil War and promoted to Corporal. Died April 7, 1876 at Readfield.


FOLSOME, JOHN WALTER
Born in Augusta May 24, 1868. Raised to the Master Mason degree in Lafayette lodge Mar. 5, 1898. Was for some years engaged in the grocery business in Readfield but in the early part of 1909 went to Washington State.


FRENCH, JOHN SHAW
Born in Fayette, ME June 14, 1797. It is not known where he was made a Mason. Elected member of Lafayette Lodge Mar. 23, 1826. He was a farmer and master carpenter; a Captain in the Militia; a selectman of Fayette for many years, and a man of much prominence in the town in his day. He died in Fayette Jan. 30, 1873.


FROST, EDMUND HARRISON
Born in Winthrop in 1816 (son of Edmund and Elioenai <Whiting> Frost) . Raised to the Sublime degree of Master Mason degree in Lafayette Lodge June 8, 1850. Tyler 1850-51; J.D. 1853. He was a harness and trunk maker. Died Dec. 15, 1860 at Readfield. (Also married a daughter of John O. Craig as did George Fillebrown above).


FROST, HENRY DANFORTH
Born in Winthrop Aug. 10, 1824 (son of Edmund and Elioenai <Whiting> Frost). Raised to the Sublime degree of Master Mason degree in Lafayette Lodge Feb. 7, 1852. He was a merchant tailor at Readfield for many years and afterward moved to Skowhegan, where he died.


FULLER, EDWARD
Born in Winthrop, Maine Jan. 22, 1782 (son of Francis and Hannah <Cobb> Fuller). Raised to the Sublime degree of Master Mason degree in Temple Lodge (Winthrop) in 1818. He was a Charter Member of Lafayette Lodge in 1826 (early meetings held at his home and at Fillebrown's until first hall was constructed in 1827). He was also a Charter member in 1850 when the new charter was issued (after the "dark days of Masonry"). He was Secretary 1826; J.W. 1827-28; S.W. 1829' Master 1830-31; Treasurer 1832-1850. He was a lawyer and followed his profession for many years at Readfield Corner (several men studied under him including Gov. Lot Morrill and Timothy O. Howe, US Post Master General). Readfield Town Clerk 1812-1814. Maine House of Representatives 1823. County Commissioner 1833-36. He died in Readfield Aug. 26, 1856.


FULLER, WILLIAM CROCKER
Born in Winthrop, Maine Nov. 23, 1791 (son of Francis and Hannah <Cobb> Fuller). Raised to the Sublime degree of Master Mason degree in Temple Lodge (Winthrop) Aug. 26, 1818. At the re-organization of Lafayette Lodge he became a Charter Member. He was J.W. 1849-50; S.W. 1851/ Readfield selectman 1842-46; deputy sheriff  of Kennebec County and a leading citizen of both Winthrop and Readfield He died suddenly on the street in Winthrop Sept. 16, 1861.


FULLER, JOHN GRAY
Born in Turner, Maine May 19, 1843. Raised to the Sublime degree of Master Mason degree in Lafayette Lodge Jan. 27, 1866. Educated at Kents Hill School. He was a painter by trade and was at one time in business in Boston. He had also spent some time in the Western U.S. Died Nov. 28, 1873 at Kents Hill and buried with Masonic rites.

GAREY, CALEB EMERY
Born in Sanford, Maine June 7, 1834. Made a Master Mason in Lily Lodge, Morrisaiana, NY. Afterward a member and Master of Guiding Star Lodge, Tremont, NY. He became a member of Lafayette Lodge Jan 5, 1901 and was also a member of Lafayette O.E.S. Bro. Garey was a car builder and was superintendent of car shops in New York many years. After coming to Readfield he was engaged in farming. In the late (Civil) War he served in the 6th Maine Regt. and was a member of the G.A.R. He was also a member of the Readfield Grange P. of H. He died at his home in Readfield Aug. 31, 1905.


GIBBS, HARRY MARSTON
Born in Livermore, Maine May 17, 1870. Raised to the Sublime degree of Master Mason degree in Lafayette Lodge Jan. 1, 1901; S.S. 1902. Member of Winthrop Chapter R.A.M. Trinity Commandery K.T. and Lafayette Chapter O.E.S. In company with Bro. Frank A Dow he owns and operated the stage lines from Kents Hill to Readfield Depot and to Mt. Vernon and North Wayne. American Express agent at Readfield Depot. Lives at Kents Hill.


GILBRETH, JOHN
Born at Mt. Vernon April 19, 1782. He was one of seven brethren elected to membership March 23, 1826. There is no record available as to where he received his degree. His home was in Mt. Vernon and he was probably a farmer. No record of his death has been found.


GILE, ASA
Born in Mt. Vernon, ME Oct. 20, 1811. Raised to the Master Mason degree in Lafayette Lodge Oct. 2, 1852; Secretary 1853; J.W. 1854-55; S.W. 1856-1859; He learned the trade of brick mason and was a skilled workman. Later he studied law and was admitted to the Kennebec Bar in 1843. He was town clerk in 1851-52. In 1861 he was the Democratic candidate for Representative to Congress (he lost to Anson P. Morrill of Readfield). He died in Readfield Jan. 1, 1888. (Buried Readfield Corner Cemetery)


GILE, EDWARD HENRY
Born in Readfield June 12, 1855 (son of Asa and Ursula <Smith> Gile). Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge May 6, 1893. He attended schools in Readfield, the little Blue School in Farmington and Westbrook Seminary. For a time he was engaged in manufacturing of sash and blinds and also of fine fishing rods. He afterwards entered the employ of M.C.R.R. where as baggage master and conductor he remained until failing health compelled him to give up all work. He died at Auburn Maine June 18, 1902 and was buried with Masonic rites at Readfield (Corner Cemetery).


GILE, WALTER CUDWORTH
Born at Everett, MA Jan 8, 1875 (son of Edward and Mary <Cudworth> Gile). Raised to the Sublime degree of Master Mason degree in Lafayette Lodge April 17, 1897. Member of Lafayette Chapter O.E.S. Received his education in the town schools and at Kents Hill. Is in the employ of New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad at Boston where he lives (in 1909). He also has devoted considerable time to the study of elocution and is frequently engaged in public entertainments.


GILMAN, EDWIN SHERMAN
Born in Readfield Sept. 16, 1859 (son of Samuel S. and Lucinda <Hanson> Gilman). Raised to the Master Mason degree in Lafayette Lodge Sept. 7, 1889. He was an electrician by occupation. Died suddenly at the home of his mother in Readfield May 6, 1891.


GILMAN, HIRAM
Born in Mt. Vernon, Maine (son of Joseph and Anna <Stain> Gilman) Jan. 14, 1804. Raised to the Master Mason degree in Lafayette Lodge March 31, 1860. He served the lodge several years as Tyler and Chaplain and was a faithful honored member. He was a carpenter by trade. Died in Readfield March 18, 1877.


GILMAN, JACOB
Born at Mt. Vernon, Maine Nov. 7, 1805 (son of Stephen and Polly <Stain> Gilman). Raised to the Sublime degree of Master Mason degree in Lafayette Lodge Dec. 27, 1827. From records he does not appear ever to have been a seeker for office. His membership extends over a period of fifty-eight years, the longest of any member, yet he held office but two years, Tyler 1853 and Secretary 1849 but his interest in and devotion to Masonry were proverbial. He was a carpenter by trade. He was elected and Honorary Member March 4, 1876 and died at his home at Kents Hill July 8, 1885 and was buried with Masonic ceremonies.


GILMAN, JOSEPH
Born at Readfield Dec. 15, 1856 (son of Samuel S. and Lucinda <Hanson> Gilman). Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Dec. 3, 1881; S.D. 1882; Master 1888. He was a member of Winthrop R.A. Chapter and Trinity Commandery, K.T. He was a house painter for several years and then a clerk in a drug store in Boston. He died at the home of his mother in Readfield at the home of his mother after a long illness June 10, 1889.


GOODWIN, JOHN CHARLES
Born at St. Albans, Maine in 1844. Made a Master Mason degree in Lafayette Lodge July 31, 1881. He was a photographer by occupation. Died in Lewiston Feb. 5, 1882.


GORDON, DANIEL JR.
Born in Readfield Jan. 13, 1801 (son of Daniel and Relief <Savage> Gordon, grandson of Ithial and Mary <Glidden> Gordon). Raised to the Sublime degree of Master Mason degree in Lafayette Lodge Jan. 11, 1830 and was the last candidate upon whom the degrees were conferred in the old lodge. He was a farmer in East Readfield. He died Sept. 10, 1868.


GORDON, NELSON DUDLEY
Born in Readfield April 29, 1846 (son of Stephen and Lovina <Sherburne> Gordon, grandson of Daniel and Relief Gordon above). Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Aug. 10, 1867; S.D. 1877-78; S.W. 1879-80; Master 1881-83; He was a member of R.A. Jerusalem R.A. Chapter at Hallowell and Trinity Commandery, K.T. For many years he conducted an extensive business in grain, feed, lumber and a general store at Readfield Depot. He was one of the selectmen of Readfield in 1884-86 and town treasurer nine years from 1892. He was Post Master at Readfield Depot from 1887-1893 and from 1901 until his death. He was a member of the Maine House of Representatives in 1899. He died at his home in Readfield Depot March 26, 1906. (wife was Mary Henry, born in NJ)


GORDON, CHARLES MELVIN
Born in Mt. Vernon Feb. 13, 1848 (son of George W. and Melvina <Norton> Gordon, g-grandson of Ithial Gordon noted above through mother's line). Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Aug. 5, 1876. He is a carpet printer and lives in Winthrop, Maine. (Died in Winthrop Oct. 18, 1909. Buried Glenside Cemetery)


GORDON, JAMES
Born in Readfield Aug. 1, 1799 (son of Jonathan and Martha <Savage> Gordon, grandson of Ithial Gordon noted above). Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge April 1, 1828. He was living in New Gloucester, Maine in 1873 but nothing more is known of him. (His married Betsey Davis of Readfield, ME in 1826. Stonecutter by trade. Moved to Chesterville where he died 1883. Note about his living in New Gloucester in 1773 MAY be an error.)


GORDON, NELSON THOMAS
Born in Readfield Feb. 4, 1884 (son of Nelson D. and Mary <Henry> Dudley noted above). Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Apr. 19, 1905. Member of Winthrop R.A. Chapter and Trinity Commandery, K.T. At his father's death he succeeded to his business, which he is still carrying on (in 1909). His home is at Readfield Depot. (died in 1947, buried Readfield Corner Cemetery. His son Nelson, Jr. carried on the business and also founded Gordon Pontiac at Readfield Depot).


GREELEY, CHARLES PRESCOTT
Born in Hallowell, Maine June 2, 1839 (son of Isaac and Hannah <Leavitt> Greeley). Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge June 5, 1880; Steward 1881-82; He operated the tannery (on Factory Square, previously that of Joseph Fogg) for a number of years, afterward went to Framingham, MA where he lived for several years then returned to Readfield where he engaged in farming. He died Nov. 16, 1898 at his home in Readfield.

HAINES to HUTCHINSON

HAINES, LEWIS
Born in Readfield, Maine July 11, 1798 (son of Capt. Dudley and Alice <Ford> Haines). Received his Master Mason degree in Lafayette Lodge April 19, 1827; J.D. 1829. He was a merchant at Readfield Corner and built the store (in 1826) over which was the first Masonic Hall. (After him Lory Bacon, the first Master of the lodge, ran a store at that location. Lewis lived in Livermore for a short time - was living there when his father died in 1825.) Lewis was town treasurer 1830-33. Died in Readfield Oct. 7, 1834.


HAINES, WILLIAM DUDLEY
Born in Readfield Oct. 25, 1859 (son of Dudley W. and Clarissa <Hankerson> Haines, g-nephew of Lewis Haines above). Received his Master Mason degree in Lafayette Lodge Jan. 29, 1893; J.D. 1894; J.W. 1895. A plumber and hardware dealer in Waterville, ME. Leader of the Waterville Band. (married Gertrude Mace of Readfield in 1887).


HANDY, FREDERICK ALBERT
Born in Readfield Oct. 13, 1860. Received his Master Mason degree in Lafayette Lodge April 3, 1897. For several years he was in the boot and shoe business, at Readfield, which he later disposed of and now (1909) lives in Oakland, Maine where he does general repairs in the same line.


HANNAFORD, ELI SNOW, DR.
Born in Farmington, Maine June 10, 1848. Made a Mason in Blue Mountain Lodge, Phillips, ME. Affiliated with Lafayette Lodge since Jan. 2, 1904. Graduated from Bowdoin College Medical School 1869. Located in Phillips the same year. Removed to Readfield in 1875 where he has since lived and practiced medicine. (Home was on Winthrop Road about 1/8 mile south of Readfield Corner intersection. Died May 15, 1923 in Springfield, MA).


HARLOW, JAMES GRANT
Born at North Anson, Maine May 18, 1868. Received his Master Mason degree in Lafayette Lodge Apr. 7, 1894. Is a proprietor of the West Carry Pond Camps, a sportsmen resort in the Dead River region. He has been postmaster at Dead River, American Express Agent and ticket agent for the Franklin & Megantic R.R. at Carrabasset; assessor of Dead River Plantation for one year. Lives at Dead River (in 1909). (Living in Windsor, ME 1920, Old Orchard, 1930. Date of death unknown)


HARRIMAN, BENJAMIN WARREN, SR.
Born in New Sharon, Maine June 23, 1835. (Moved to Kents Hill with his mother Cynthia in 1861 to the old Dudley Moody Tavern which later burned and BWH rebuilt).  Received his Master Mason degree in Lafayette Lodge Dec. 2, 1865. (Married Mary Olin Jaques in 1870) Owned and operated the stage line from Kents Hill to Readfield Depot for eighteen years. Later for twenty years was engaged in business, dealing in agricultural implements, stock and horses; also did a large business in fire and life insurance. Selectman for three years from 1886. Member of Maine House of Representatives 1880. Postmaster at Kents Hill 1897-99. Died at his home at Kents Hill June 5, 1903.


HARRIMAN, MERLE JAQUES
Born at Kents Hill, Maine Sept. 16, 1877 (son of Benjamin and Mary (Jaques) Harriman). Raised to Sublime degree of Master Mason degree in Lafayette Lodge June 30, 1900; J.D. 1901; S.D. 1902; J.W. 1907; S.W. 1908. Member of the Alpha Council and Trinity Commandery. He is a carpenter by trade and also agent for  life and fire insurance. Lives at Kents Hill (in 1909). (Sold house at Kents Hill in 1910 and moved to Winthrop Rd. near Readfield Corner, a house that remains in the Harriman family to this day. Merle was grandfather of Dan Harriman of Readfield. Died in Readfield in 1949)


HARRIMAN, BENJAMIN WARREN, JR.
Born at Kents Hill Dec. 27, 1880. Raised to Sublime degree of Master Mason degree in Lafayette Lodge Dec. 7, 1907. Member of Winthrop Chapter R.A.M. Graduated from Maine Wesleyan Seminary (Kents Hill School) in 1898 and has since been a telegrapher and station agent for the M.C.R.R. Is now located at Woodfords (Portland) Maine. (eventually moved to Littleton, NH where he operated a movie theater and then to Woburn, MA where he died in 1943. Buried in Readfield Corner Cemetery)


HARVEY, WILLIAM
Born in Readfield June 26, 1841 (son of William and Dorothy Harvey; married Elsie Brann in 1864). Received his Master Mason degree in Lafayette Lodge July 5, 1884. He was actively engaged all his life in a variety of mercantile and manufacturing enterprises (North Wayne Scythe Co; Dirigo Salt Works for two). For several years he resided at Augusta but later returned to Readfield where he passed the remainder of his life. He died August 31, 1905 at Peak's Island, Maine. (Buried at Readfield Corner Cemetery)


HARVEY, ROSCOE WILLIAM
Born in Readfield July 2, 1865 (son of William and Elsie <Brann> Harvey above; married Angie Willard in 1890). Made a Master Mason degree in Lafayette Lodge Aug. 1, 1896; S.D. 1900; Member of the Winthrop Chapter R.A.M. Graduated from Colby College. Studied law but never engaged in practice. Became a partner in his father's business and is now engaged in lumbering operations. Lives in Augusta, Maine (in 1909). (Moved to Hallowell by 1920 then to Boston where he died in 1923. Buried at Readfield Corner Cemetery).


HARVEY, JAMES ELMORE
Born in Augusta, Maine Sept. 30, 1867 (son of William and Elsie <Brann> Harvey above; married Mabel Stone of Winthrop in 1905). Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge May 2, 1898. Member of Winthrop Chapter R.A.M. and Trinity Commandery K.T. Educated at Kents Hill School and University of Maine. Is not superintendent of a woolen mill in Oakland, ME (also engaged in lumbering) and lives in that town (in 1909). (Moved to Readfield to live on Harvey homestead on Winthrop Road after his father died. He and wife started Harvey Island for boys they named Camp Haukeemah. Eventually moved to Winthrop where he died in 1959. He and wife are buried in East Winthrop Cemetery).


HAWES, SEWELL JACOBS
Born at Readfield, Maine Nov. 10, 1842 (son of Gilman and Eliza <Hutchinson> Hawes). Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge May 5, 1864; S.S. 1868-1869 and 1871-1872; J.D. 1874-75; S.D. 1876; J.W. 1877; S.W. 1878; W.M. 1879-80 and 1899. Member of Lafayette Chapter O.E.S. and Readfield Grange P.H. Selectman in Readfield three years from 1897; and for many years was deputy sheriff of Kennebec County. He lived all his life on the farm (on Hawes / Walker Road) where he was born and died there April 11, 1901. (Buried Readfield Corner Cemetery)


HAYWARD, MATTHEW
Born in Readfield March 4, 1811 (son of Joshua and Susannah Hayward). Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Jan. 31, 1852; Tyler 1852; S.S. 1854; J.D. 1855; Secretary 1855-58; Treasurer 1859-1863. Town Treasurer 1844-1851 and 1861-1863. Having means sufficient for his maintenance he was engaged in no business except the management of his small farm. He died in Readfield Sept. 27, 1863. (Never married; buried at Readfield Corner Cemetery as are his parents)


HENRY, JONATHAN GRANT
Born in Beverly, NJ Sept. 25, 1865 (his sister Mary was wife of Nelson Dudley Gordon mentioned above). Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Feb. 12, 1900; S.S. 1901; J.D. 1902; S.D. 1903-04; J.W. 1904-05; S.W. 1906; W.M. 1907. Past Worthy Matron of Lafayette Chapter O.E.S. A blacksmith by trade. Lives in Readfield (in 1909) (Still a resident of Readfield (on Church Road) when died Oct. 1930 at Ann Gale Hospital in Winthrop. Cremated at Forest Hill Crematory, Boston, MA. Place of burial unknown)


HEWETT, JOHN SANFORD WINGATE
Born in Hallowell, Maine Nov. 19, 1835 (son of John and Betsey (Haines) Hewett. His father died when he was 3 years old). Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge May 15, 1880. Was for a time in trade at Fayette and was post master from 1878 to 1881. Has served his town in all its important offices and was deputy sheriff of Kennebec County for several years. Is now living on the farm in Fayette which has been the family home for three generations.


HODGDON, FREDERICK A
Raised to Master Mason degree Sept. 29, 1828. Nothing further is known of him except that he was a clergyman but of what denomination is not known.


HOLMES, JONATHAN
Born 1779 perhaps in Monmouth, Maine. Made a Master Mason in Temple Lodge Aug. 13, 1821. He was a charter member of Lafayette Lodge in 1826 (also a founder of the Union Meeting House); the first J.D. 1826-27. He was a cabinet maker by trade and much of the household furniture used in this town 75 years ago, together with the spinning wheels of older times, were his handiwork. He left Readfield and was living in Canaan, Maine in 1865 at which time he was very feeble and died soon after. The exact date of his death is not known.


HOLMES, WILLIAM E
Born Nov. 1804 (son of Jonathan Holmes above). Made a Master Mason of Lafayette Lodge May 18, 1826; J.D. 1828; S.D. 1829. He was a cabinet maker and farmer. He moved from Readfield many years ago and lived in Canaan, Athens, Brighton, Harmony and Solon. Sept. 4, 1880 at his request the Lodge voted to give him a Master Mason's diploma. He is said to have died in Harmony but the date is not known.


HOSCROFT, HENRY
Supposed to have been born in one of the Canadian Provinces about 1828. Made a Master Mason of Lafayette Lodge May 4, 1864. He was a farmer and tanner living at East Readfield where he died April 18, 1867.


HOWLAND, CHARLES FRENCH
Born at Mt. Vernon Oct. 14, 1859.  Made a Master Mason in St John's Lodge No. 62 Albany, Oregon. Affiliated with Lafayette Lodge since May 2, 1903. He was a V.P. and acting president of Albany College in Oregon for two years. Principle of Pennell Institute in Gray, Maine three years and is now a teacher in Fall River High School. A member of Cumberland Chapter R.A.M. Yarmouth, ME; Portland Council, R & S Masters, Portland Commandery. K.T. and Maine Consistory S.P.R.S. Lives at Fall River, MA (in 1909)


HUNTON, CROMWELL PITTS
Born in Readfield 1812 (son of David and Catherine (Turner) Huntoon). Made a Master Mason of Lafayette Lodge Aug. 31, 1850; J.D. 1850-51; Secretary 1863-64; Treasurer 1866. He was a shoemaker by trade and with the exception of a few years in Lewiston lived all his life in Readfield. Was a deputy sheriff of Kennebec County for years. He died April 2, 1867 at Lewiston.


HUNTON, WILLIAM GEORGE
Born in Readfield Nov. 13, 1852 (son of George W. and Emily <Fuller> Huntoon; married Elizabeth H. Mills of Augusta in 1882. First cousin 1x removed of Cromwell Hunton above) . Made a Master Mason of Lafayette Lodge Mar. 13, 1875; S.D. 1883-84 and 1888; J.W. 1889; Master 1890-92; Member of Lafayette Chapter O.E.S. and Readfield Grange P. of H. Educated at Kents Hill School and Bowdoin College. Studied law and admitted to the Maine Bar but has never engaged in practice. He is a farmer, was a member of the Maine Board of Agriculture and Secretary of Kennebec County Agricultural Society for several years. Readfield Town Clerk 1878; selectman 1890-93 and 1908-09. Lives on the farm where he was born (on Sturtevant Hill Road. Died 1944 in Portland, Maine. buried in Readfield Corner Cemetery).


HUNTON, EMERY LOUIS
Born in Readfield Sept. 19, 1840 (son of Samuel and Betsey <White> Hunton; married Sarah Ellen Ramsdell of Readfield in 1865; Cousin of Emery and William Hunton above). Made a Master Mason of Lafayette Lodge Feb. 15, 1887; Tyler 1888-89 and Marshal since 1890. Readfield selectman three years 1894-1897; tax collector Readfield 18 years/ A member of the 4th Maine Battery Civil War. (In 1909) lives on his farm in Readfield (Thundercastle Road. Died 1914 and buried Readfield Corner Cemetery)


HUNTON, JEFFERSON DUDLEY
Born Readfield Aug. 8, 1844 (son of Samuel and Betsey <White> Hunton; brother of Emery Hunton above; married Emma Wilbur 1864). Made a Master Mason of Lafayette Lodge Jan. 6, 1902. He is a farmer living in Readfield. (Died 1914 following the amputation of his left leg 2* to gangrene. Buried Readfield Corner Cemetery).


HUNTON, HARTWELL ROBINSON
Born in Readfield Jan. 29, 1873 (son of Jefferson D. and Emma <Wilbur> Hunton - see above; married Vivian Fogg in 1897). Made a Master Mason of Lafayette Lodge June 5, 1897; J.D. 1899. A farmer and lives in Readfield. (Died 1940, buried Readfield Corner Cemetery)


HUNTON, GEORGE CRAIG
Born in Readfield Dec. 15, 1869 (son of Emery L. and Sarah <Ramsdell> Hunton - see above; married Esther Wilson whose father was A.H. Wilson, also a Mason.). Made a Master Mason of Lafayette Lodge Feb. 11, 1893; Steward 1893-94; J.D. 1896-97; S.D. 1901; J.W. 1902-03; S.W. 1904-05; Master 1906. He has been engaged in the meat and grocery business. He was postmaster of Readfield from 1901 to the time of his death. He died March 2, 1908 from the effects of a bullet wound received from the accidental discharge of a rifle in the hands of his young son. (Lived Main St. Readfield Corner, 2nd brick house on right driving east from the intersection. Two young sons at the time of his death - Oramell age 13. He died at age 23 in France WWI. The other son was Emery A. who was 7 at the time of his father's death. George C. Hunton is buried at Readfield Corner Cemetery)


HUSSEY, ELIJAH
Born 1793 (in Rome, Maine a son of Richard and Nancy <Robinson> Hussey; married Nabby Locke in 1819. They lived on Thundercastle Road, at the intersection of Chase Road. After Elijah died Lafayette Lodge supported her financially until her death 22 years later). Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge June 2, 1828. He was a farmer but little is now known of him. He was a Captain in the old Militia and was on command at one time of one of the companies that went to the Aroostook in the time of trouble with Great Britain (Aroostook War) in 1839. He died Sept. 1, 1846. (buried Readfield Corner Cemetery)


HUTCHINSON, EDWIN MARTIN
Born in Waterville, Maine March 26, 1854 (son of Michael and Elmina <Hutchinson> Horan. He abandoned the family and went west in search of gold. She divorced him and took back her maiden name for herself and two children. After Horan left Elmina moved with her children back to Readfield and lived there the rest of her life).  Raised to Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Nov. 3, 1906. Has been in the shoe business since he was sixteen years of age and now operated the Hutchinson Walkover Boot Shop at Indianapolis, Indiana. His residence is Readfield, Maine. (After his first wife died he moved back to Readfield where he met his second wife and had six children - the fifth, Alice, being the first wife of Roy Giles. Alice died young. Edwin built a large home on South Road and started his own Hutchinson Walkover Shoe and Boot Shop in Portland, Maine which his sons took over later. Edwin died 1931 and is buried in East Readfield Cemetery).


HUTCHINSON, JOHN
Date and place of his birth is not known. Raised to Master Mason degree at Lafayette Lodge May 25, 1826. He was a clergyman but of what denomination is not known. Further information has not been obtained.

JEWETT to JUDKINS

JEWETT, NOAH
Born in Durham, NH (Apr. 2, 1784, son of Noah and Lydia <Boynton> Jewett of Cornish, ME; married Betsey Bryant). Where he was made a Mason is not known. Became a member of Lafayette Lodge May 10, 1851. Had been a Master of a lodge for some time but it is not known where. He was a sea captain; was shipwrecked and lost all his property. The last years of his life he lived at Kents Hill. Lafayette Lodge contributed largely towards his support for several years. He died Jan. 5, 1866. (Moved to Kents Hill between 1830 and 1840 from Cornish, ME. Records indicate he was a sea captain and merchant in the 1820s from New York, Boston and Virginia to Bermuda and on voyages to England. He was the second of eleven children. His brother John also lived at Kents Hill.)


JEWETT, NOAH
Born at Kents Hill July 24, 1835 (son of John and Betsey <Barker> Jewett; nephew of Noah Jewett above; married Sarah Marrow of Winthrop in 1863). Raised to Master Mason degree in Lafayette Lodge August 22, 1863. He served (in Civil War) in the 10th Maine Vols. two years and enlisted in the 2nd Maine Calvary as 2nd Lieut.; was promoted to 1st Lieut. and later was in command of the organization. He engaged in trade at Kents Hill for many years. Was postmaster fourteen years and one year a member of the board of selectmen. He now lives in Auburn, ME and is a barber. (Died 12, 1910 in Auburn where he is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery).


JOHNSON, LEVI
Born at Readfield, was then part of Winthrop, March 23, 1772. Raised to Master Mason degree in Lafayette Lodge  April 4, 1826. One of the first two candidates raised, and May 25th the same year he was made Honorary Member. He was selectman of Readfield five years from 1804. He was a farmer. Later in life he removed to Canaan, Maine where he died Feb. 25, 1861. (Probably the same Levi Johnson who bought property in Vienna starting in 1808 and moved there by 1820, before moving on to Canaan. Gave occupation as tanner on deed when first bought land in Vienna).


JOHNSON, JERE PAGE
Born East Readfield Aug. 28, 1825 (son of Daniel and Lydia <Packard> Johnson; married Margery Blake of Turner). Raised to Master Mason degree in Lafayette Lodge  May 17, 1860. Was never an active Mason and did not become a member until June 7, 1873. Was engaged in trade in Readfield for many years (house, store and post office on Giles Road, Factory Square). He was postmaster at Readfield from 1878 to 1885. The last years of his life he lived at North Anson, where he died Feb. 3, 1899. (He and wife moved to Anson in 1890 to live with their dgt. / only child. Interesting that when they left Readfield they sold their property to Lafayette Lodge for $1,000 and lodge resold it in 1900 for same amount. Unknown what it was used for in that time period.)


JONES, ARIAN HOWARD (misspelled Arrion in the book)
Born in Readfield Sept. 26, 1878 (son of Leslie and Ruth <Wentworth> Jones; m1. Marcia Carle 1906, deceased 1921 m2. Frances "Fan" Adell 1923).  Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Jan. 2, 1904. Is a member of Winthrop R.A.C. and Lafayette Chapter O.E.S. Lives at Readfield Depot and works for the M.C.R.R. (Died Aug. 13, 1961. Buried at Readfield Corner Cemetery)


JORDAN, ARTHUR DENWOOD
Born at North Yarmouth, Maine Dec. 10, 1846 (son of Nathaniel and Abigail Jordan; family moved to Wayne and then Readfield). Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Feb. 17, 1872. Lives in Bedford, P.Q. Canada where he is an edge tool maker (in 1909).


JUDKINS, DANIEL
Born in Fayette March 18, 1790 (son of Benjamin and Mary <Philbrick> Judkins; married Sally Baldwin in 1814).  Raised to Master degree in Temple Lodge, Winthrop July 9, 1821 and became a member of Lafayette Lodge Mar. 23, 1826. He was a farmer in Fayette all his life and also kept a tavern and was postmaster at Fayette Corner for many years. Died May 20, 1862.


JUDKINS, JOHN
Born in Fayette March 18, 1788 (son of Benjamin and Mary <Philbrick> Judkins; brother of Daniel above; married Ann Baldwin in 1812). Made a Mason in Temple Lodge, Winthrop. Became a member of Lafayette Lodge Mar 23, 1826. He removed to Prentiss, Maine where he was a prominent citizen and member of the Legislature from that town in 1858. He was a Captain in the War of 1812 and was promoted to the rank of Major. He died in Prentiss Dec. 12, 1878 (where is buried in Thompson Corner Cemetery)


JUDKINS, LORAIN MOODY ("L.M.")
Place and date of birth not ascertained. Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Feb. 27, 1826 and became a member Feb. 21, 1830, the last to become a member of the old lodge (before the "dark days of Masonry"). He was a shoemaker and a violinist of some skill and taught dancing schools. Died in Augusta, date not known. (He lived at Readfield Corner across from the Asa Gile mansion on Main St.)

KEATING to KNIGHT

KEATING, MATTHEW
Born about 1786 but where is not known (born in Ireland; married Sarah Pettingill of Fayette in Boston in 1829. She a dgt. of Matthew Pettingill of Fayette). It is not known where he was made a Mason. He affiliated in Lafayette Lodge Sept. 17, 1849. He lived in Fayette where he was a farmer. Died Jan. 1, 1860 (of typhoid fever). (He was a stone-cutter and builder in Boston 1801-1829).


KIMBALL, CINKLAR SCRIBNER (also seen as Sinclair)
Born in Temple, Maine Aug. 7, 1837 (married 1859 to Roseabelle Heath of Readfield) Raised to Master Mason degree in Lafayette Lodge June 25, 1870. Demitted from Lafayette Lodge July 5, 1874 and again affiliated Feb. 6, 1886. S.D. 1866; J.W. 1887; S.W. 1888; Master 1889 and has served as Tyler for more than twenty years. For many years he was an overseer of woolen spinning, but in later years he has been a farmer and gardener. Is a member of Lafayette Chapter O.E.S. (A Civil War Veteran. Died in 1937, buried Readfield Corner Cemetery).


KING, ZENAS
Born in Monmouth, Maine April 10, 1800. Affiliated with Lafayette Lodge since March 2, 1829; J.S. 1829; Secretary 1831-32. Was engaged with his brother in the grist mill while living in Readfield. In a great freshet in the late 1850s his wool shop situated on a small stream near the Kennebec River at Hallowell was carried away, with him in it and he was drowned in the River but the exact date is not known.


KING, BERNARD
Born in Monmouth, Maine March 18, 1796. Affiliated with Lafayette Lodge since March 2, 1829; treasurer 1830-31; J.W. 1832; Proxy to Grand Lodge 1832. With his brother Zenas he operated the grist mill at Readfield for some years. He died at Hallowell, Maine May 21, 1846.


KNIGHT, HARTLEY WILLIS
Born in Gray, Maine Dec. 25, 1856. Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Sept. 4, 1886. He was a carpenter by trade. Later he became a traveling salesman for the firm of Hall & Knight in Lewiston. He died suddenly at his home in Auburn, Maine Oct. 6, 1901.

LARRABEE, WILLIAM CLARK
Born in Cape Elizabeth Dec. 23, 1802. Raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Oct. 18, 1827. He graduate from Bowdoin College in 1828; was a teacher in the Maine Wesleyan Seminary (Kents Hill School) 1827-28. and acting principle part of that time and again 1835-40 when he was elected to a professorship n Asbury University in Indiana. He was elected Superintendent of Public Instruction for Indiana in 1852 and again in 1856 and was also in charge of the Asylum for the Blind. He died in Indiana, May 4, 1859.


LAUGHTON, WILLIAM
Born in Hallowell Oct. 4, 1833 (son of Thomas and Isabella <Atkinson> of Hallowell married Olive Whittier of Readfield in 1874). Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Sept. 3, 1870. Member of the Lafayette Chapter O.E.S. Formerly Bro. Laughton was a tanner but for a good many years he has been a farmer and gardener. Lives in Readfield (on Old Kents Hill Road. died 1926 buried Readfield Corner Cemetery on Whittier / Morse / Laughton lot)


LEIGHTON, BERTRAN EDWIN
Born in Mt. Vernon Apr. 19, 1869 (son of Timothy and Sarah <Huntoon> Leighton). Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge May 2, 1903l J.S. 1904-05; S.D. 1906. Lives at Readfield. Sealer in boots, shoes and men's furnishing boots. A member of Lafayette Chapter O.E.S. (died 1920 buried at Readfield Corner Cemetery)


LEWIS, JOHN EUGENE
Born in Dedham, MA Jan. 25, 1845. Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Sept. 8, 1866; J.W. 1874-75; Master 1876-78; D.D.G.M. 1890; a member of Jerusalem R.A.C. and Trinity Commandery K.T. For many years he was a carpet printer by trade. One of the selectmen of Winthrop in 1889. He was elected Honorary Member of the lodge June 6, 1896. Died at his home in Winthrop June 9, 1900.


LEWIS, ERNEST WOODBURY
Born in Portland, ME Dec. 9, 1851. Raised to Sublime degree of Master Mason at Lafayette Lodge Mar 1, 1873. Was a carpet printer in the oilcloth works for some years and then became a farmer, which occupation he now follows at Livermore Falls, Maine where he has lived for some years. ( died at Readfield 10/13/1924; buried East Readfield Cemetery)


LOVEJOY, HERMAN WINFIELD SCOTT
Born at Salem, Maine Dec. 10, 1862 (son of Bartlett & Susan Lovejoy). Made a Mason in Siloam Lodge, Fairfield, Maine Dec. 10, 1862 and was S.D., Secretary, S.W. and Master at that lodge and D.D. G.M. of the 13th Masonic District. Affiliated with Lafayette Lodge, Jan. 4, 1902. He is a member of Winthrop R.A.C. and Trinity Commandery K.T. He is a carpenter by trade and lives at Kents Hill. (boarding in a home in Kents Hill in 1910, divorced; date of death and place of burial unknown)



LOVEJOY, FREDERICK AIKEN
Born in Fayette, Maine Mar. 3, 1845 (son of Howard and Eliza <Aiken> Lovejoy) Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Jan. 19, 1867. He was a clerk by occupation for many years, and at his death he was in the employ of Hovey & Co. of Boston (single). He died in Boston Dec. 4, 1903.



LOVEJOY, SEBASTIAN SMITH
Born at North Wayne, Maine May 28, 1840 (son of Tillotson L. and Jerusha Ann <Fillebrown> Lovejoy). Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Nov. 30, 1861. Was a scythe maker at North Wayne; later went to Janesville, Wisconsin and engaged in the lumber business; then went to Arkansas in the same business. He now lives in Port Angelos, Washington where he still continues in the lumber business (in 1909). (died 1912 in Port Angelos, WA)



LOVELL, STEPHEN, REV.
Born in Weymouth, MA April 1799. Made a Mason in Amity Lodge, Camden, Maine in 1825. He was made an Honorary Member of Lafayette Lodge May 10, 1827 and was Master of Temple Lodge in Winthrop in 1828. He was a member of the Jerusalem Chapter R.A.M. and of the Council Encampment of Commandery of Boston. He was a Master of St. Paul's Lodge, South Boston and G. Chaplain of Grand Lodge of Massachusetts and an Honorary Member of Portland Lodge. He was a distinguished Methodist clergyman and is said to have preached 6,000 sermons. He was also a prominent lecturer on Masonry. He died in Boston in 1858.

MACE, ALBERT EUGENE
Born at Readfield April 8, 1872 (son of Charles A. and Lucy A. <Richardson> Mace) Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge April 3, 1899. Demitted April 4, 1903 and again affiliated April 7, 1906. He now lives in Providence, RI where he is employed an overseer in the Moses Brown School (in 1909). (also lived in Wilbraham, Norton and Attleboro, MA - where he was living in 1940. Date  and place of death unknown. Married Susanna Magovern, a native of northern Ireland, in 1903 in Wilbraham).


MACE, RICHARD
Born at Readfield June 1782 (son of Andron / Andrew and Jane <Hale> Mace). Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge May 10, 1827. He was a farmer at East Readfield (also a brick layer who built several brick structures in Readfield. He was one of the founders of Union Meeting House as well as one of the builders in 1827.) Died at East Readfield Jan. 30, 1861(buried at East Readfield Cemetery. Married Eunice Johnson of Readfield in 1807)


MALLETT, CHARLES HERBERT
Born at Gilbert's Cove, Digby Co. Nova Scotia Oct. 11, 1874. Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Jan. 15, 1903. Member of Lafayette Chapter O.E.S. Is a barber and lives in Readfield (in 1909). (Died at Readfield 5/13/1915)


MANTER, GEORGE WEST
Born at Starks, Maine Dec. 3, 1849 (son of John W. and Hannah <West> Manter). Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge May 11, 1878; treasurer 1879-82; Secretary 1883-87. He was a member of the firm J.W. Manter & Son and is now the firm of G.W. Manter and M.W. Manter, drugs and general merchandise. A member of Trinity Commandery K.T. And Lafayette Chapter O.E.S.; town treasurer, 1878; town clerk 1879-1885 and 1908. Lives at Readfield, Maine. (Married Alice Haines, dgt. of Dudley W. Haines, in 1899. Died Jun. 16, 1941, buried Readfield Corner Cemetery. Manter brothers' - George and Melville - stores were both destroyed in the devastating fire of June 1921 but they rebuilt.)


MANTER, JOHN WEST JR.
Born in New Sharon, Maine April 3, 1858 (son of John W. and Hannah <West> Manter; brother of John W. and Melville Manter). Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge June 3, 1882. Has held no Masonic office. Postmaster at Readfield Corner 1897-1901. Painter and paper hanger by trade. (Married Bertha Hoyt of Manchester in 1880, she died 1907; married Etna May in 1916; died 1939 in Readfield, buried Readfield Corner Cemetery).

MANTER, MELVILLE WEST
Born in New Sharon, Maine May 12, 1861 (son of John W. and Hannah <West> Manter; brother of John W. and George Manter). Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge  Apr. 1, 1882. Only office has held was organist, which he held practically all the time since he was made a Mason. Is a member of the firm G.W. & M.W. Manter (see George W. Manter above FMI). A member of Trinity Commandery K.T. and Maine Consistory S.P.R.S. (Married Lillian Cowan in 1909; died in Readfield Apr. 27, 1943, buried Readfield Corner Cemetery).


MASTERMAN, JOHN ROBERTSON
Born at Weld, Maine July 21, 1838 (son of Ira and Susan <Robertson> Masterman). Made a Master Mason in Blue Mountain Lodge at Phillips, Maine. Affiliated with Lafayette Lodge Apr. 19, 1870 and demitted Feb. 7, 1880 and became a member of Caribou Lodge at Caribou, Maine. Again affiliated with Lafayette Jan. 7, 1893 and since that time has been Chaplain; elected Honorary Member Sept. 7, 1907. Is a member of Lafayette Chapter O.E.S. He is a minister of the Methodist church and has held the pastorate over about twenty different charges but in now retired. He was in Co. B of the 2nd Maine Calvary in the Civil War and is a member of the G.A.R. and also of P. of H. He lives at Readfield (in what is known as the Harriman house, Winthrop Road, in 2016). (Married Arabine Phillips of Weld in 1857; They lived at their home in Readfield until 1909 - one year before he died when they sold and moved to Monmouth, ME to live with their daughter Lilla Marston. His other children had moved out west to Washington state as did Lilla after her parent's deaths. Rev. Masterman died at age 73 years of diabetes and Bright's Disease. He is buried in Readfield Corner Cemetery)


MASTERMAN, ERNEST
Born in Caribou, Maine April 7, 1879 (son of John R. and Arabine <Phillips> Masterman, above) Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Dec. 29, 1902. Was formerly engaged in the grocery business in the firm of Folsom & Masterman. Went to Washington state in 1909 and us there at this writing. (Married in 1903 to Leonora Juliette Manter, dgt. of John West Manter above. Died in Yakima, WA in 1955; buried in that town)


MAYO, NATHANIEL JR.
Place and date of birth unknown (born in 1795 in Maine). Raised to the Sublime degree of Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Dec. 14, 1826; S.D. 1827-28. He was a clothier and had a fulling mill at the sawmill dam (head of Torsey Pond, Bean's Mills). There was also a grist mill there at that time. The time or place of his death has not been learned. (Married Eliza Bearce in 1820, both of Readfield at that time. Research leads me to believe that Mayo moved to East Livermore where he was made post master Dec. 1820. In 1827 he and his partner Nathaniel Bartlett were ejected from the Readfield mill via a court case. Nathaniel died in Livermore in 1862. Buried in Richardson Cemetery in Livermore Falls.)


MERRIMAN, DAVID DOUGLASS "D.D."
Born in Harpswell, Maine Nov. 27, 1831 (son of Robert and Clarissa <Douglass> Merriman). Made a Mason in Richmond, Lodge, Richmond Maine. Affiliated in Lafayette Lodge Dec. 5, 1874. He has lived in Readfield for more than thirty years, all the time engaged in the dry good business. (Married Emeline Perkins of NH in 1859; died in Readfield in 1916, buried in Readfield Corner Cemetery)


MERRIMAN, ELI E. "E.E."
Born in Tamworth NH Oct. 11, 1863 (son of D.D. and Emeline <Perkins>  Merriman above). Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge  Jan. 30, 1892; J.D. 1893; S.D. 1894; Town Clerk of Readfield 1888-1893. U.S. railway and mail clerk. Lives at Woodfords (Portland) Maine (in 1909). (Married in 1885 to Celia Haines dgt. of Dudley W. and Clarissa <Hankerson> Haines. Returned to live in Readfield where he died in 1956; buried in Readfield Corner Cemetery)


MERROW, LOUIS WOODMAN
Born in Farmington, Maine Sept. 10, 1878. Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge  April 7, 1904; J.S. 1904-05; J.D. 1906; S.D. 1907; J.W. 1908. Educated at Cony High School, Augusta. Learned the trade of mason, which he followed for several years. Is head clerk at F.I. Brown and lives at Readfield (in 1909).


MILLETT, CHARLES HOLMES
Born in Leeds, Maine Dec. 25, 1844. Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge  Apr. 13, 1867. Affiliated with Raboni Lodge and because a member of Lafayette Lodge May 5, 1877; Secretary 1878-1882; S.D. 1885; He was a carpenter by trade. Died at Readfield Oct. 29, 1890.


MILLETT, EUGENE LEROY
Born at Milton Plantation, Maine Mar 25, 1870. Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge  April 7, 1906. He is a clerk and lives at Readfield Depot (in 1909).


MILLETT, SAMUEL GOULD
Born at Leeds, Maine Dec. 5, 1832. Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge  Aug. 5, 1868 under a waiver of jurisdiction from Fellowship Lodge at Bridgewater, MA. Affiliated with this lodge Sec. 4, 1875. For several years was in the gold mines of California and Idaho. From 1865 to 1896 he was engaged in the shoe business as foreman, superintendent and manufacturer. Retired from active business in 1896. Lives at Brockton, Mass (in 1909).


MILLIKEN, JOHN SEWELL DR.
Born Farmington, Maine Sept. 20, 1875.Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge  Mar. 4, 1905; S.S. 1906; J.D. 1907; S.D. 1908/ Graduated from the Maine Medical School and was one year each an intern in Christ Hospital in Jersey City, NJ and Scarlet Fever and Diphtheria Hospital of New York City. Settled in Readfield (Church Road) in 1903 in the practice of medicine, where he now resides (in 1909).   (He died in 1943)


MITCHELL, NEAL DR.
Born in Jacksonville, Florida Oct. 21, 1855 (son of Dr. Joseph and Myra Mitchell). He received the Entered Practice Apprentice and Fellowship degrees in Duval Lodge, Jacksonville in 1892 and was raised to the Sublime degree of Master Mason of Lafayette Lodge Mar. 13, 1907. His education was received at Kents Hill School and Lapham Institute in N. Scituate, R.I. Graduated from Amherst College and Medical College, N.Y. and Long Island Medical College, Brooklyn, receiving his medical degree from the later college; Friederich Wilhelm University, Hamburg, Germany; intern at General Hospital at Hamburg Germany. Member of the Society of American Physicians at Berlin, Germany; American Medical Association and Florida Medical Association. Was in the active practice of his profession from 1880 to 1892 when he was obliged to relinquish due to ill health. His practice continued through one of the most serious outbreaks of yellow fever that Jacksonville had ever had and through it all he remained in the city caring for the sick. Now lives in Readfield (in 1909). (Bought the Asa Gile mansion on Main Street after he retired in FL. Owned hotels in Florida which his wife carried on after he died in 1911. She also owned the mansion in Readfield for several years.)


MOORE, APPLETON
Born in Vienna, Maine Feb. 13, 1861. Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge  Jan. 24, 1898; S.S. 1900; Town clerk of Readfield 1898-1901; traveling salesman for a Portland wholesale firm. Lives in Readfield, Maine (in 1909).


MORGON, ERNEST AMOS
Born in Weld, Maine Oct. 8, 1849 (son of Harrison and Julia <Piper> Morgan). Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge  June 4, 1887; Secretary 1888-89 and 1893 and 1901; Member of the Lafayette Chapter O.E.S. Ten years deputy sheriff Kennebec County formerly a farmer but since selling his farm he has been engaged the most of the time as traveling agent purchasing furs. (Son William "Bill" married Pearl Hannaford, a daughter of Dr. Eli Hannaford of Readfield. Bill founded Camp Maranacook Boys' Camp. Ernest Morgan died in Readfield 1922, buried Readfield Corner Cemetery)


MORRILL, SAMUEL
Born in Brentwood, NH June 4, 1800 (son of Nathaniel and Eleanor <Morrill> Morrill). Made A Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge March 27, 1827; Tyler 1828-29; J.D. 1830. He was a sleigh maker by trade and had a shop where Mr. McCormick now lives (Readfield Depot, north side of street next to tracks). Died Feb. 14, 1843 (buried East Readfield Cemetery)


MORRILL, GEORGE STANLEY
Born in Readfield Nov. 12, 1837 (son of Maj. Jacob and Maria <Clary> Morrill). Made A Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge July 25, 1863; J.D. 1867-68; S.D. 1869-72; J.W. 1873; S.W. 1874-75. A farmer and lives at East Readfield on the farm where he was born. (Died 2/14/1911. Buried East Readfield Cemetery)


MORRILL, CHARLES CRAIG S.
Born at Readfield Mar. 13, 1850 (son of Maj. Jacob and Maria <Clary> Morrill; brother to George S. above). Made A Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Mar. 8, 1873. A farmer and lives at East Readfield. MORRILL, PHINEAS, JR.
Born at Brownville, Maine June 24, 1830 (son of Phineas, Esq. and Sylvina <Gerrish> Morrill). Made A Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Mar. 18, 1870; J.D. 1872-73; treasurer 1874-78; J.W. 1879-80; S.W. 1881-84; Master 1885. In earlier life he was spinner and weaver at woolen mills. In later life he retired from active business. Died at Readfield Feb. 12, 1890 and buried (Readfield Corner Cemetery) with Masonic honors. (married Elizabeth Fairbanks of Winthrop in 1855)


MORSE, CHARLES SANFORD
Born at Readfield in 1827 (parents unknown). Made A Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge June 26, 1858; J.D. 1858-59; S.D. 1860. He was a carriage and ornamental painter by trade. He painted the Master's carpet used in Lafayette Lodge for nearly fifty years. He served in the Civil War, was taken prisoner and confined in several Confederate prisons and died at Florence (Stockade), South Carolina Sept. (Nov) 13, 1864. His Masonic diploma and Masonic pin he entrusted to the Southern Mason but they were never again seen. (married Olive Whittier dgt of Joseph Whittier of Readfield in 1858 and they lived at the Whittier farm on North Road (Cyrus Whitcomb 2016) until Charles died. After that they sold the Whittier farm and Olive bought a house on Old Kents Hill Road (Nancy Barnes 2016) and married to William Laughton, also a Mason. A memorial to Charles S. Morse is engraved on the Whittier / Morse / Laughton family stone in Readfield Corner Cemetery although it is highly likely Charles S. Morse was actually buried in one of the mass graves at the Florence Stockade, SC)


MORSE, WILSON FAY
Born in Westfield, NY May 7, 1845. Made a Mason in Elm Creek Lodge in Randolph, NY. Affiliated with Lafayette Lodge Jan. 2, 1875. Member of Lewiston lodge of Perfection. In the Civil War he was Band Master of the 2nd Division of the 12th Corps and was at the Battle of Lookout Mountain where his band rendered most stirring music for the first two hours of the battle. Since 1870 he has been the Director of (Morse) Conservatory of Music at Kents Hill. Received the degree of Music Doc. from Syracuse University. Lives at Kents Hill (in 1909 - currently the Dennison house).


MORSE, LOUIS BEETHOVEN
Born at Kents Hill Nov. 14, 1878 (son of William F. and Ella <Deuel> Morse). Made A Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Mar. 15, 1902. Educated at Kents Hill School and was a teacher at (Morse) Conservatory of Music. Died at Portland, Maine May 23, 1903.


MURPHY, HAMLIN HIRAM
Born at Bristol, Maine Sept. 19, 1845. Made A Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Mar. 13, 1875. Served three years in the 19th Maine Infantry in the Civil War. ember of the San Francisco, California police force from 1878-1898 and retired on half pay because of injuries received in service. In employ of the Wells Fargo Express Co. as a treasurer, guard on railroad stage lines for several years. Died in San Francisco Mar. 18, 1908.

NESBITT to NOLIN

NESBITT, SAMUEL
Born in Lebanon, Maine Apr. 22, 1802 (son of Charles and Judith <Downs> Nesbitt). Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Oct. 3, 1857; Tyler 1868-1870 and 1875 and 1879; J.S. 1858-59. He was a most constant attendant at the meetings of the lodge to the very last of his life. He was a railroad engineer and machinist and during and after the late war was employed by the York and Erie Railroad. He was made an Honorary Member Feb. 4, 1882. He died at Readfield Jan. 1, 1891 and was buried (at Readfield Corner Cemetery) with Masonic rites. (Married Sophia Brackett in Lebanon, ME in 1826)


NICKERSON, HEZEKIAH OWEN "H.O."
Born in Waterville, Maine Feb. 10, 1833 (son of Hiram Snow and Mary Jane <Smith> Nickerson). Raised to Sublime degree of Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Mar. 12, 1859; secretary 1859060; J.W. 1861-63; S.W. 1864-65; Master 1866-68 and 1886-87; D.D.G.M. 12th Masonic Dist. 1881-1883. Secretary Kennebec Agricultural Society many years. Member and Master of Readfield Grange, P. of H. He was a member of the 1st Maine Calvary in the Civil War. He was a farmer (on Nickerson Hill Road). Died at his home in Readfield Sept. 17, 1891. (Married Georgiana Packard in 1864. After Nickerson died she remarried, to Judge Emery O. Bean in 1896 - also a Mason who owned the building where the second Masonic Lodge was relocated to after the revival of 1849 following the "dark days of Masons". All are buried at Readfield Corner Cemetery)


NICKERSON, AUGUSTUS ALDEN
Born in Strong, Maine Feb. 14, 1838 (son of Hiram Snow and Mary Jane <Smith> Nickerson, brother of H.O. above).  Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Mar. 3, 1860; J.D. 1862. He learned the photographers art in its early days and was in the business several years. Some of the portraits in Masonic Hall are his work (probably burned in the fire of 1921 as only records, papers and the secretary's desk were rescued). He went west many years ago and engaged in ranching and the railroad business. He is now a farmer and lives in Topeka, KS. (Married Fannie Dane of Fayette in 1869. By 1885 they were living in Nickerson, KS, then on to other towns of Cedar and Soldier before settling down in Topeka by 1916).


NICKERSON, ARTHUR SNOW
Born in Readfield Sept. 21, 1866 (son of H.O. and Georgiana <Packard> Nickerson above). Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Jul 2, 1898; Secretary 1902 and 1908. A member and Worthy Patron of Lafayette Chapter O.E.S. and a member and former Master of Readfield Grange P. of H. Educated at Kents Hill School. Has always lived on the hoe farm on which he and his brother Walter still operate. Member of board of selectmen of Readfield 1900-02. (Married Eugenia Shaw in 1903. Moved to Northbridge, MA after 1910 where he died in 1951. Buried there in Pine Grove Cemetery)


NICKERSON, WALTER, AUGUSTUS
Born in Readfield Dec. 23, 1869 (son of H.O. and Georgiana <Packard> Nickerson and brother of Arthur above). Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge July 2, 1898; S.S. 1899; J.W. 1901; S.W. 1902-03; Master 1904-05. Has always lived and still continues to live on the home farm in Readfield, (Nickerson Hill Road in 1909). Is a member of Lafayette Chapter O.E.S. and of Readfield Grange P. of H. Educated at Kents Hill School. (Married Mary E. Austin in 1906. Walter died in 1948, buried in Readfield Corner Cemetery)


NOLIN, GERVAIS
Born at St. Gervais, Prov. of Quebec Feb. 15, 1830 (son of Francois, III and Marguerite <Cabot> Nolin). Raised to Sublime degree of Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Jan. 27, 1855; S.S. 1856-57. Made an Honorary Member Oct. 7, 1905. When eighteen years old he came to North Wayne where he was employed in the scythe shops for fifteen years.  From 1863 to 1870 he was Supt. of Dunn Edge Tool Works at Fayette and from 1870 to 1878 held the same position in Oakland. He removed to Skowhegan in 1878 and engaged in the manufacturing of scythes himself. He lives in Skowhegan (in 1909 with his son Frank and family, widowed ). (Married Celia Fillebrown, dgt. of Luther and Hannah <White> Fillebrown of Readfield, in 1852. Died 7/1915 in Skowhegan, buried in Southside Cemetery.)

PACKARD, HENRY CLAY
Born in Readfield Aug. 1, 1844 (son of Oakes and Sally <Hanscom> Packard) Made a Master Mason of Lafayette Lodge Jan. 5, 1867; treasurer 1869-71; J.W. 1872; post master at Readfield 1872-1877l selectman 1876. He is a druggist. Lives in Auburn, Maine (in 1909) where he still does a large business in the drug line and is clerk in charge of Station No. 2, Auburn P.O. (Married Annie Lucy Friend in 1868. He died in Auburn 3/14/1916).


PACKARD, STEPHEN
Born in Readfield Sept. 15, 1801 (son of Ralph and Nancy <Vose> Packard). Made a Master Mason of Lafayette Lodge May 18, 1826; J.S. 1826-27; S.S. 1828; S.D. 1831; the last until 1849. He was a cabinet maker and removed to Massachusetts. He died at the Home for Aged Men in Boston May 2, 1876. (Married Elizabeth Harris of South Boston in 1832).


PALMER, ARTHUR WALDEN
Born in Dexter, Maine Aug. 22, 1881 (son of George and Sarah <Doe> Palmer). Raised to Sublime degree of Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge May 4, 1907. Educated at Kents Hill School and Colby College. Is teaching at Haverford School for Boys at Haverford, PA (as did John A. Chase, another Mason). In company with John A. Chase Palmer the two men conduct Camp Cebennek (Chase's boys camp) on the shore of Torsey Pond, Readfield. (During the summer months) Palmer's home is Kents Hill (and during the school year was Haverford). (Married Alice Owen of Auburn, a Colby classmate, in 1908. He died 2/6/1948. Place of burial unknown)


PEABODY, BARRAK CECIL
Born in Searsport, Maine July 11, 1866 (son of Albert and Emily <Payson> Peabody) Made a Master Mason of Lafayette Lodge Feb. 10, 1892. Formerly M.C.R.R. station agent at several stations on that road. Is not an undertaker in business in Portland. (Married Alice Proctor in Waterville in 1892. Died in 1929 in Portland)


PEACOCK, ELMER ELLSWORTH "E.E."
Born in West Gardiner, Maine July 25, 1873 (son of Benjamin and Ellen <Fuller> Peacock). Made a Master Mason of Lafayette Lodge June 5, 1897; S.D. 1898; J.W. 1899; Master 1900-01; Secretary 1908; Superintendent of Schools in West Gardiner 1895-96; selectman in Readfield 1904-05; treasurer 1907; Secretary of Kennebec Agricultural Society 1907-08. Educated at Kents Hill School and principal of commercial department at the Maine Wesleyan Seminary 1896-1905. Member of the firm Beane & Beane lawyers (Oliver Beane and his son Emery O. Beane, also Masons). Lives at Kents Hill, Maine (in 1909) (Married Della Curtis of West Gardiner in 1896. Founded Camp Kiwanacook on Lake Maranacook in 1907 which later became Kamp Peacock and lastly Dixon's Camps. Peacock died in Readfield in 1950, buried Readfield Corner Cemetery. His last home was located on Church Road near the Union Meeting House)


PORTER, BYRON, DR.
Born in Vienna, Maine May 11, 1802 (son of Benjamin and Eliza <Barton> Porter). Affiliated with Lafayette Lodge May 25, 1826. Where he received his degree is not known. Graduated from the Maine Medical School and was a doctor by profession. He died in Worcester, MA (Feb. 2, 1871 of consumption, buried Central Cemetery, Beverly, MA. Married Eliza Morse)


QUNICY, WILLIAM BRAZER
Born in Neponset, MA Feb. 3, 1885 (son of William and Mary <Adams> Quincy). Made a Master Mason of Lafayette Lodge Nov. 3, 1906. Member of the Winthrop R.A.C. and Trinity Commandery K.T. and Lafayette Chapter O.E.S. Is now in an insurance house in Boston and lives in Dorchester, MA (in 1909). (Married Grace Chase of Livermore in 1915. Died in 1958, place of burial unknown)

RECORD, WILLIAM CLEMENT "W.C."
Born in Hallowell, Maine Jan. 24, 1837 (son of Isaac and Martha <Douglass> Record) Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Jan. 1, 1888. From the time he was eight years old he was for a number of years he was a sailor. In 1859 he went to the California gold mines; later he went to Nevada, where for eighteen years he was engaged in mining, lumbering and stock trading. From 1887 to 1888 he was engaged in farming at Kents Hill (owned / lived on the "Kent Farm"); in later years he purchased the grist mill at (Factory Square) Readfield which he continued to operate in connection with a general grain business, until a short time before his death. One of the selectmen in Readfield 1883-84. He died at his Readfield home July 13, 1907. (Married Melvina S. Dunn in 1870, dgt of Samuel and Abigail <Haines> Dunn of Hallowell).


RECORD, CHARLES DUNN
Born in Redwood City, CA Mar. 12, 1873 (son of W.C. and Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Jan. 31, 1895; J.D. 1895; S.D. 1896; J.W. 1897-98. Educated at Kents Hill School and for fifteen years was engaged in the printing business at Augusta, Readfield and Waterville. Died suddenly at Oakland, Maine Sept. 27, 1907 and is buried at Readfield (Corner Cemetery). (In 1899 he married Ruby Weston, dgt. of Thomas Milton and Alice (Haines) Weston of Winthrop and Readfield. After his death she married Benjamin Harriman, Jr.)


RICE, PEABODY HARRIMAN
Born in Meredith, NH Aug. 11, 1797 (son of Nathaniel and Jane <Swasey> Rice). Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge June 30, 1828 but did not affiliate with the lodge. He moved to Monson in 1837 and became a member of Kineo Lodge at Abbot and very likely became a member of Doric Lodge in Monson. He became a very enthusiastic Mason. He was Capt. of the Militia Co. at Mt. Vernon. At Mt. Vernon he carried on the business of clothier and dyer and for that purpose with a partner built a brick mill at the village. At Monson he kept a tavern for sixteen years and then retired to a small farm. He was injured in an accident with a runaway horse and for five years was a helpless invalid. He died Sept. 1872 and was buried with Masonic rites, according to his wishes.


RICE, RICHARD KENDALL
Born in Meredith, NH Jan. 3, 1799 (son of Nathaniel and Jane <Swasey> Rice) and came with his parents to Mt. Vernon as a child. Where he was made a Mason is not known. Affiliated with Lafayette Lodge Mar. 23, 1826. Many years ago he removed to Portland, (Chelsea, MA), New York and finally to California. He is said to have been an active businessman but in what line has not been learned. He died in California many years ago. (Married Mary Burton in 1824. In 1850 he was living in Portland and his occupation was "botanic medicine". Died May 3, 1873 in San Rafael, California. Buried in the Masonic Cemetery, San Francisco)


RICH, JOSEPH WALDO VINAL
Born in Chesterville, Maine April 5, 1849 (son of Joseph H and Martha <Lewis> Rich). Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge April 15, 1876. Made a Chapter Mason in Winthrop Chapter and the Orders of Knighthood were conferred on him in St. John's Commandery, Providence R.I. in which he was Prelate. By profession he was a teacher, having taught most successfully at the Maine Wesleyan Seminary (Kents Hill School) and afterwards as Principal of Edward Little High School, Auburn, Maine; Somersworth High School, New Hampshire; Woonsocket, R.I. High School and Messer St. Grammar School, Providence, R.I. He was also a minister of the Methodist Church but not as pastor of any church. Died in Providence, RI (suddenly of heart attack when attending a luncheon in Providence) June 16, 1905. Married in 1875 to Adelia Catherine Parsons in  Hyde Park, MA)


RICHARDS, JOHN WESLEY
Born in Lincolnville, Maine March 17, 1833 (son of Isaac and Lydia <Thompson> Richards). Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Mar. 19, 1864. He was a scythe maker at North Wayne many years; afterwards was engaged there in a general store. Later removed to Foxboro, MA and was for a number of years a commercial traveler. Died in Foxboro, MA Feb. 19, 1909. (Married Mary Amanda Atwood, a Readfield native, dgt of Jonathan and Mary <Beedy> Atwood. John Wesley Richards and his wife are buried in Rock Hill Cemetery in Foxboro, MA)


RICHARDSON, GEORGE FROST
Born in Readfield Aug. 2, 1828 (son of Ebenezer and Relief <Eaton> Richardson) Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Dec. 7, 1867; S.S. 1870; S.W. 1873; Master 1874-75; Chaplain 1881 and 1883; Marshall 1885-1889. With the exception of a few years as a bookkeeper in Baltimore, Maryland he spent his whole life in Readfield engaged in farming. Died in Readfield Oct. 21, 1889. (Married Abigail Ann Jose of Readfield in 1855. Buried in Readfield Corner Cemetery)


RODERICK, JOHN BAPTISTE
Born Jan. 18, 1848 in St. Victor de Tring, County Bosse, P.Q. Canada and came to Maine with his parents when a small boy. Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Sep. 4, 1880; S.W. 1895-96. For many years he has been one of the skilled workmen in the scythe factories at Fayette, North Wayne and Oakland. Now (1909) lives in Oakland. (Married Annie E Randall in 1874. Died in Wayne in 1919)


RUSSELL, GEORGE ALMON
Born Jan. 8, 1842 in Avon, Maine (son of Reuben and Anna <Masterman> Russell below). Raised to Sublime degree of Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge April 18, 1865; Secretary 1866 to 1872; S.W. 1876-77. Educated at Maine Wesleyan Seminary (Kents Hill School). Superintendent of Schools at Readfield; selectman for 6 years 1871-77; Secretary of Kennebec County Agricultural Society; railway mail clerk 1877-81; superintendent of mails at Augusta P.O. 1881-86. Member of the Maine House of Representatives in 1877 and 1905 and in the Senate in 1887. Steward of Wilbraham Academy, Wilbraham, MA 1887-1902; trustee of the same as well as at Maine Wesleyan Seminary at Kents Hill. He was 2nd Lieut. of Co. F, 21st Maine Vol. Infantry which was part of Gen. Banks command in Louisiana. He is a member of Seth Williams Post G.A.R. at Augusta and Maine Commandery of the Loyal Legion. He was appointed the agent of the State to erect the monument over the grave of Gov. Jonathan G. Hunton. He lives at Readfield (large brick house at 33 Old Kents Hill Rd. in 1909, where he spent summers. Winters were spent in Wilbraham). (Married Lydia Millett of Leeds, ME in 1862. Died in Wilbraham, MA in 1941. buried in Readfield Corner Cemetery)


RUSSELL, REUBEN
Born Feb. 14, 1817 in Weld, Maine Ephraim and Rebecca <Ireland> Russell) Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Apr. 27, 1861; J.S. 1861; Chaplain 1862-63, 1872-73, 1885. He was elected an Honorary Member Mar. 2, 1902. He has always been a farmer (on Church Rd., north / adjacent to Readfield Corner Cemetery. No longer there) until age and infirmities have obliged him to relinquish all work. (Married Anna Masterman of Weld in 1841. Died 1910 in Readfield, buried in Readfield Corner Cemetery)

SAMPSON to SWIFT

SAMPSON, AMOS ATTWELL
Born at Kents Hill April 5, 1830 (son of David S. and Mary <Richmond> Sampson) Raised to Sublime Degree of Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Feb. 12, 1859. Elected to membership Feb. 19, 1859 and demitted the same date. Again became a member May 10, 1862; treasurer 1864-65; J.W. 1867-68. Excepting for a short time in the western states he lived his whole life on the ancestral farm at Kents Hill, the last of the name (grandson of Luther Sampson, founder of Maine Wesleyan Seminary / Kents Hill School). He was a trustee of the Maine Wesleyan Seminary for many years. He was elected an Honorary Member of the lodge Feb. 6, 1897. He died Sept.. 2, 1905. (Married  Nancy Stevens of Fayette in 1864. Buried at Kents Hill Cemetery)


SCOTT, ALBERT GALETAN
Raised to Sublime Degree of Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge May 18, 1829; Tyler 1830. Nothing further is known of him. (Born in 1806 in Hallowell, Maine son of Abijah and Annie <Mace> Scott. Married Eliza Mayo of Readfield. A carpenter by trade. Moved to Dexter, Maine where he died in 1896 and is buried in Elmwood Cemetery)


SHERBURN, NOYES SMITH
Born Mt. Vernon Oct. 5, 1826 (son of Simon and Anstress Sherburne). Raised to Sublime Degree of Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Aug. 3, 1861; J.S. 1862; J.D. 1863; Marshall 1866-67. He was a blacksmith (shop was located across the road, on corner lot, from school / Readfield Historical Soc.) at Readfield Depot. Died Jan. 26, 1892 at his home (South Road) Readfield Depot. (Married Mary Jane Craig of Readfield, dgt. of Daniel O. Craig of Readfield Depot. Noyes Sherburne died 1892. Buried Readfield Corner Cemetery)


SKOFIELD, SAMUEL THOMAS DR.
Born July 15, 1840 in Baring, ME (son of Thomas and Rebecca <Day> Skofield who moved their family to West Mt. Vernon from Baring) Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Sept. 23, 1871. Was a physician and for several years on staff at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He died in New Boston, NH which was then his home Aug. 14, 1887 (Married Mary Andrews of New Boston, NH in 1884. Dr. Skofield buried in New Boston Cemetery)


SMITH, CHARLES DR.
Born May 5, 1799 in Readfield (son of Capt. Mathias and Comfort <Carpenter> Smith) Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge May 10, 1827. He was a doctor and lived in Fayette for a short time (had moved there by 1810) and died there Dec. 12, 1829. (When living in Readfield his office was located on Old Kents Hill Road, near / across from end of the Mill Stream Road. No longer there. (Married Susannah Randolph Taylor of Readfield in 1800. Dr. Smith's place of burial unknown)

SMITH, DAVID
It is not known for certain which David Smith of Readfield this is but we do know he was neither of those below. This David may have been the single son of Thomas Perrin & Betsey (Perkins) Smith. Their son, David was born  in 1798 and died in 1841. Thomas was a merchant at Readfield Corner and Betsey a tailoress who operated a tailor shop on Church Road. They divorced between 1810 and 1820. The next David Smith listed who was Scotland born, also operated a tailor shop on Church Road a short distance from Betsey.  

 
SMITH, DAVID
Born in Scotland Jan 10, 1791. Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge May 10, 1827; treasurer 1849-58; Tyler 1865. Proxy to Grand Lodge in 1844, twelve years after the lodge had ceased to work. When a young boy his parents removed to Ireland where his father started a linen mill. When fourteen years of age he was apprenticed to a Dublin tailor and served seven years at his trade. (Arrived in USA in 1821) For more than forty years he has worked his trade in this town and the most of that time in the little shop on the North (Church) Road known to all the older people of the town as "Tailor David's Shop". He died Oct. 9, 1865. (Married Sarah Kennedy of Jay in 1833. Buried at Readfield Corner Cemetery)


SMITH, DAVID, JR.
Born in Readfield Apr. 25, 1843 (son of David and Sarah <Kennedy> Smith above). Made a Master Mason in Webster Lodge, Sabattus, Maine. Affiliated with Lafayette Lodge Feb. 4, 1899. He was a cutter in a wholesale clothing business in Boston for thirty-two years. He lives in Sabattus (1909). (Married  Lydia Hewey of Wales, ME in 1865. David Smith died in Wayne in 1923. Buried in Readfield Corner Cemetery)


SMITH, ERNEST EDMUND
Born in New Sharon, Maine Aug. 17, 1876 (son of Eugene and Miriam <Luce> Smith) Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge June 21, 1902. A member of Mt. Kebo R.A. Chapter at Bar Harbor (resident of Bar Harbor in 1907 when he married). A teacher by occupation, principal of a large grammar school in Harrisville, RI and also principal of an evening school in the same place. His home is at Harrisville, RI (in 1909). (Married Inez Harman of Edinburg, Hancock County, Maine in 1907. They were married in Salisbury, MA. Smith died in 1956 in Wareham, MA. Buried in Oakland Grove Cemetery in Bourne, MA.) 


SMITH, REUBEN
One of the charter members of 1826. He was a farmer and lived (on South Road) on farm now owned by Fred Packard. He died (in Readfield) Oct. 1, 1846. (Reuben was born Sept. 9, 1774 in Fremont, NH son of Enoch and Elizabeth <Adams> Smith. His parents moved to Readfield in 1799 and bought a farm on South Road where they ran a sawmill on Beaver Brook. This farm remained in the family for several generations and the South Road was referred to as "Smith Ridge" as a result. Reuben married Elizabeth Robinson of Brentwood, NH in 1800. He is buried in East Readfield Cemetery along with several family members)


SMITH, MATHIAS
Born in Readfield Nov. 16, 1816 (son of John Carpenter (known as Carpenter) and Hannah <Stone> Smith and g-grandson of Mathias Smith, the settler who came to Readfield about 1768). Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge May 21, 1853; S.D. 1853-54. Member of the House of Representatives 1872, from Wayne. He was elected Honorary Member of the lodge Mar. 3, 1894. He was a farmer and mechanic. He died at his home in North Wayne Aug. 13, 1895. (Married in 1847 to Mary Ann Currier of Winthrop, dgt. Noah Greeley and Mary <Barnard> Currier. Mathias is buried in North Wayne Cemetery)


SMITH, GUSTAVUS
Born in Readfield Aug. 30, 1829 (son of John Carpenter (known as Carpenter) and Reliance <Stone> Smith and g-grandson of Mathias Smith, an early settler in Readfield. Half brother to Mathias Smith above. He carried on the Smith homestead on Sturtevant Hill Rd. as did his son Walter and grandson Reggie. The homestead was torn down in 2015). Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Oct. 18, 1862; S.S. 1884; S.D. 1887; J.W. 1888; S.W. 1889-91. He was a member of the 21st Maine Regt. in the Civil War and is a member of the G.A.R. He was four years in the gold mines of California (around 1850). The rest of his life has been spent on the farm where he was born and which has been the home of his ancestors for (more than) one-hundred twenty-five years (in 1909). He is a member of the Readfield Grange P. of H. (Married 1863 to Lydia Ann Ladd of Readfield, dgt. of Gorham and Charlotte <Whittier> Ladd. Gustavus died in 1921 and is buried in Readfield Corner Cemetery)


SPAULDING, JESSE
Born Dec. 23, 1842 in Belgrade, Maine (son of Parker and Elizabeth <Danforth> Spaulding, natives of Chelmsford, MA)  Made a Master Mason in Relief Lodge, Belgrade. Affiliated with Lafayette Lodge Mar. 5, 1898. He is a farmer and lives (Church Road) Readfield. He served one year in the 28th Maine Infantry in the Civil War. He is a member of the Readfield Grange P. of H. (Married Sarah Day of Wayne in 1880, dgt. of William and Mary H Day. Jesse died  July 17, 1914, buried Belgrade)


STERNS, VARUS
Born in Landaff, NH Oct. 9, 1818 (parents unknown). Made a Mason in St. Mark's Lodge, Newburyport, MA. Demitted from Social Friends Lodge, Keene, NH and affiliated with Lafayette Lodge Feb. 7, 1885; S.S. 1885-86. By occupation he was a carpenter (house wright) and cabinet maker. For a time he kept a hotel at (Portland in 1860, Keene, NH in 1870 and) at Readfield (in 1880 - very likely the Maranacook House / Elmwood which Asa Gile had opened at Readfield Corner in 1880). Later Verus Sterns moved to New Jersey. (in 1900 was living with son Clarence in Fall River, MA) Old age, misfortunes and ill health made him dependent on others. In the summer of 1903 Lafayette Lodge had him moved to Readfield where he was cared for by the lodge until his death, Nov. 13, 1903. (Married Nancy Ballou in Grafton, NH 1842. Verus Stearns place of burial unknown)


STROUT, SAMUEL DENNEN
Born in Poland, Maine Oct. 21, 1822. Raised to Sublime Degree of Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Apr. 29, 1868. He was elected Honorary Member De. 7, 1907. Was for many years a scythe maker at North Wayne and was a skilled mechanic in iron and steel. Died at Collinsville, CT Apr. 8, 1909.


SWETT, SAMUEL, REV.
He was one of the original charter members and the first S.D. He was a local Methodist preacher. Where he had other occupation has not been learned. He died in Portland, Maine. (Born Apr. 22, 1765 in Epsom, NH son of Dr. Stephen and Sarah <Adams> Swett. Married Sarah Webster in Gray, Maine in 1794. Joined the Masonic Lodge in Portland in 1801. Started serving at the Methodist Church in Hulls Cove, Hancock County in 1814. Was living in Readfield in 1830 (where his son Nahum remained until his death in 1868. By 1840 Rev. Swett was residing in Gray, ME. Died in Portland Jan.8,1845 and is buried in Bell Hill Cemetery, Otisfield, ME with his parents)


SWETT, SAMUEL JR.
(Born July 15, 1795 in Poland, Maine son of Rev. Samuel and Sarah <Webster> Swett above) He was the first candidate to receive the degree in Lafayette Lodge. He was initiated and crafted Mar. 23, 1826 and raised to Sublime Degree of Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Apr. 4, 1826; treasurer 1826; Secretary 1827-28; J.W. 1829; S.W. 1830-31; and Master 1832 being the last Master elected to the old lodge (before the "dark days of Masonry"). He was a cabinet maker. He went away from Readfield many years ago and it now known when or where he died. (Married 1816 to Charlotte Johnson dgt. of Capt. Levi and Elizabeth <Longfellow> of Readfield. Seven of their children were born in Readfield between 1819 and 1831. In 1850 was living in Falmouth, ME. Died in Hampstead, NH July 1858. Place of burial unknown)


SWIFT, ALVIN TURNER "A.T."
Born Aug. 28, 1852 in Fayette, Maine (son of Thomas B. and Elizabeth Swift) Made a Master Mason in Lafayette Lodge Dec. 19, 1874; J.S. 1876-1881; J.D. 1881-84 and 1888; J.W. 1892. A machinist by trade and occupation. Lives at Readfield (1909). (Married Emma Sophronia Cudworth of Readfield. in 1875. A.T. Swift died at Readfield Apr. 2, 1922 buried in Readfield Corner Cemetery)
